Having a hard time (re)building as Mechanic

Somehow i can't manage to 'lock in' to the sweet spot where building begins. I open the build menu, select a turret, it spawns, then i have to move around and look up & down until i finally begin to build. Sometimes it starts when i crouch and look up, other times it only works when i stand half into the turret.. I'm confused.

Is there a tactic i don't know about?

I think if you aim for the top of the turret it usually links ok.
