I'm thinking of getting a desktop PC as my laptop is getting a bit out of date, however i don't want to have to pay those outraaaaageous computer store prices for a monitorrrr!!!

Does anyone know if it's possible for me to just hook up the desktop to my laptop so that i can use the laptop's monitor?

Thanx.

It is possible, but you're probably better of by buying a small LCD screen. You'll need a special PCI video contoller for your laptop's LCD. These controllers are available, but they're very expensive (ranging from $600, to $1000,-)

If you meant just hooking up a cable from you pc's videocard to your laptop you might have a chance to get it working if your laptop has a video-in.

You can.

It will cost you about $100.00 to do it (If your New PC has a S-video {or RCA type output on its video card}).

The $100.00 will be spent on a TV tuner card..(Or a card thats you put video into a laptop). YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT YOUR LAPTOP MEETS THE SPECS FOR THE ADAPTOR.....I made that all caps, because a friend bought a card, and he did not meet the specs, and the store would not take it back (he opened it).

You should just buy a monitor. It will look better.

lol ah yeh that's a way too, but don't get too exited about quality, because it usually lacks.. (usually low resolutions too)

Same thing I was thinking. The quality of the capture card will suck as most capture cards do not exceed a resolution of 720x480. There will also be a delay so you can forget about playing games on it. Mouse lag will be bad enough in normal desktop operations.

I think your better off with a temp monitor from a thrift store fro around $25 or so till you can save up for a better monitor. People are just throwing away their old crt monitors. Most are still good but are just being tossed out. Shop around, ask your friends or your boss at work if they have any they are getting rid of. Since CRT monitors are phasing out, prices have gone down quite a bit. You can score a $400 CRT for around $200 now. You will get better visual quality than anything a LCD can pump out at that price.

I think its just too much of a hassle to use your laptop as a monitor.

Rip it out physically? Depends on your physical strength. (might be easier to use a saw or something)

Use it as a monitor? Not after the way you ripped it out.

I have removed the light box from them. And used that for tracing stuff.

Yeh it's possible, but there is a chance there is no PCI controller for the screen your laptop uses.
