As much as I see it, and as much as I use it, I still don't know what it means exactly (along with w00t).

:) All the more reason for me to continue using it I guess. :)

l33t, translated from "l33t sp34k" to English, means "elite".

When it was first coined(in the Quake days), people knew what it meant, but now that it has fallen into wide use among l33t d00ds, it's become unknown and just something people "say".

While Kukuman has the translation correct, it's origin is much older than quake. l33t 5p34k was actually started by hackers and was once called "rodent script" (the name I still use for it.) While I'm not sure on the exact timeline, I'd feel pretty safe in placing it's origin in the early 80's.

Well, I knew it was older that wahat Kukuman has said, but I didn't think it was that old. I was thinking maybe early 90's.. I know it was big on the BBS's back in the day....
(waaaaaaaay before Quake)

Hmm...you might be right Alarion...my timelines are often screwed up. Remembering where I was and when I got my XT, I'd say that late 80's (around 88-89) is probably a better date to place it at. Ahh...the good old days when I had my k-wrad 2400 baud modem...tee hee

So how did elite come to be, and what was it first used for?
Did it have anything to do with that game of old for the BBC and the Commodore? :)

The original origin of rodent script was probably simply a way for hackers to identify other hackers. In the beginning, when it was less common, few people could understand what the hell a hacker was writing about \/\/|-|3n h3 \/\/r073 L1|<3 7415, so it was almost a secret language. A way to display to other hackers how cool, ie. 31337(elite...eleet) you were. But like all status symbols, it eventually moved out of the elite, and into the hacker masses (script kiddies), and then to the general public. Needless to say, rodent speak is generally frowned upon by status concious hackers nowadays. I surmise the real hackers don't give a crap one way or the other. To them, actions speak louder than words.

Yup i agree with alarion...

"leet speak" was also used by Warez runners/groups back at that point too.. thing was they actually WERE elite.. it wasn't easy to get into a warez bbs in the first place, especially a 1 or 0 day....

Really? It's that old? I BBSed a lot and never came across it.

I know that it did evolve though, when I started playing Quake it was "31337" and not "l33t" like it is today.

The funny thing is that now really good hackers (read HaXors if you are so inclined) call other really good hackers UberHackers. Uber being the german type word for king, geezer or Top Banana.

They also 'work' for a living, and can actually use normal English because the went to university, or at least had time to read some books when they turned 30.

Replacing f's with ph's used to be quite big too. Although the Welsh are far worse at that!

Umm yeah.. anyhow, yeah "elite" was mainly used for the warez scene.. (from what I remember).. and about getting into those "elite" BBS's.. yeah it was hard... but I don't know nuttin 'bout dat :) *whistles innocently*

actually, most of the "elite" people back in the day was actually cool. Now 99% of them are lamers..

I wanna be a k00l h4x0r!!!!

(ok, umm, not really) :)
