Grid Wars (http://www.incitti.com/Blitz/)
download the first game on the list. its a clone of a xbox 360 game called geometry wars, which i havent played. but this game is awesome. it has a great visual style, and awesome gameplay. if you have a dual analog controller, its even more fun.
when you download it, i suggest you change settings. take autoshoot off, turn scrolling on, and raise the resolution and grid resolution. have fun.
feel free to suggest any other great free games like this.

Wow! I've just played for 20 minutes and now I'm partially blind and the real world seems like it's in slow motion.

Yeah thats a pretty cool game. I like all the fancy tronish colors and sounds. The black hole things that suck you up are pretty cool too.

True, it looks a lot like the excellent freewares from ABA games.
I never heard about the "Geometry Wars" this freeware is supposed to be inspired from, but overall i am very impressed by this Grid Wars, not only a very nice concept , this is incredibly addictive.
Thanks for pointing me to this superb game

Geometry Wars was a sub-game for Project Gotham Racing 2 on the xbox.
Geometry Wars Evolved is the Poster Child for Xbox360 Live Arcade games. Costs about a fiver and is intense hi-def simple fun. Learn a few tricks and start racking up the achievements.
It's biggest problem is that it's only single player though - i prefer mutant storm for it's trippy visuals and more varied gametype including (local only) 2 player.

I haven't played it in years though... because it doesn't run in Windows XP anymore. =(
If you ever get stuck on an old Win9x machine though, get this game right away.
