Dunno how fair it is since the PC version is a couple of years old now, but the 360 version of FarCry looks amazing.

Mhh are the pictures softened up that much on purpose, or does the game look like that?

Otherwise it's great, but it's very blurry/soft

The video!! Not the low-quality tiny little pictures on the page.

It was labeled FCI Predator? That doenst sound like the PC version to me. It sounds like its been...upgraded. And why wouldnt they? Its been a few years between the release of Far Cry PC, and the release of xbox 360. Im sure they would have upgraded the engine between then. Also, most everyone knows that the folks who made the farcry engine are working on a new and vastly improved crytek engine. I wonder if the xbox 360 contains elements of this new engine? Just looking at the water makes me believe it does.

I'm not sure that they're both comparable.

I was wondering if the waves could be affected by enviromental variables such as wind, or time of day, or boats traveling over it. From what I saw I dont think it can. When the guy was standing in the boat, I saw no displacement around the boat, or ripples pushing away. When the guy shot at the water, there was no effect besides a little splash thing. Also, I noticed that the waves are heavily effected by draw distance. They dont project very far, and I saw no evidence of any LOD rendering as it appeared that the waves kinda just stopped at a certain distance.

I think I'll go out on a limb here and say that its a per pixel type shader based on a players location and viewing perspective of the water?

The first game to come with that new engine is Crysis. This is a DirectX10 game, is the 360 capable to run DX10?

It sure looks awesome:

It has been upgraded. I saw a preview on gamemax, the visuals have been enhanced from the PC version, there are more mutants and I guess there are some more added weapons. The game looked stunning in the preview

Holy ****, that Crisis game looks like Terragen :p

Anyway, about the waves not being affected by a boat or when shot at. I doubt they do in real life. Of course you'd see ripples and stuff, but it couldn't move a wave.

Yeah, I doubt any modicum (always looking for an excuse to use that word) of physics was in mind when they whipped up the waves. Just to continue the list o' nitpicks, the wave patterns themselves are pretty inaccurate in general: there's no refraction, bending, or anything except a linear series of waves.

Not saying it’s ugly or unimpressive by any means, but it might be nice if they showed off a bit more than just waves. The fauna looks pretty close to the PC version, and the weapon and boat models aren’t enough to judge what’s really in store. Either way, when it comes to water simulation and stuff like that, sometimes you wish they’d “get it right” instead of “anything to look cool by today’s standards,” ya know? I'm not expecting to simulate the full bathtub experience, but maybe the Far Cry PC-era "flat" waves that fully interacts with everything you throw at it would be just as impressive.

Far Cry: Predator for the 360 is the combination of the Xbox Far Cry material and new stuff for the 360. The Xbox version was an utter blast to play (Probably due to the lack of trigens AM I RITE HA HAAAA yeah ok).

So, more awesome gameplay and such coupled with the 360's power? Sold!

It looks Extreeeeemeeeee. One of the first game featuring DX10. I remember the video on IGN, they made a small representation of FarCry on PC (the original far cry we all already played.) versus the next FarCry. Don't remember if it was for Xbox 360 ONLY. But i know that the waves were insane and every folige had collision, realistic clouds too (inside the map, not only in the skybox)

Why on earth did they use a brown splash color when the bullets hit the water?

Else I like it, though it still needs that extra touch of the boat making ripples and splashes too, and the brown splash.

I can think of only a single game out there that does real-time environment mapping, and that is PGR3. So I understand your gripe, but that tech is still coming along. If I had to guess on how they'd do it, I'd assume they might use the mirror trick to render the surface beneath the water, and then apply the shader to it. It's certainly a fun problem to think about outside of a global illumination context.

I think you're mixing 2 games. there is one for Xbox360 only, that is the old farcry with an updated engine. The other is called Crysis, it uses DirectX10 and the movie of showing the foliage collision, the volumetric clouds, etc is from that.
