I decided I'd have my first go at maya and making models, so I started the installer that comes with UT2004, and it asks for a software key.
I checked the readme, and it said:
"The self-installer in the Extras\MayaPLE folder requires you to register
online; detailed instructions are displayed on startup."
So I registered and got a software key, and copy and pasted it into the text box, but when I click next, nothing happens! Do I have to use one that comes with UT2004? If so, where is it?

Yes Maya PLE require an activation key, you have to register online to get an activation key. Try it again, if the problem persist contact Alias.

And if all else fails, use a combination of Blender (for modeling) and Milkshape (for rigging and exporting to ut2k4)

A reply I got in the Alias Discussions (forums):
I think an Alias moderator stated in another similar thread that you cannot key/register prior versions of PLE....you should download PLE7.
I got Maya PLE 7.0 (the software key worked this time), and the plugin for exporting to UT2004 only works with 5.0. :(
But I found there's the ActorX plugin that exports to UT2004 also, so I started modeling with Maya (sorry CheapAlert, but the 3DBuzz VTMs are for Maya) and now, I have a model that's ready for exporting, but ActorX only works with non-PLE versions of Maya! What do I do? :hmm:

Oh, well.
If you can't register with the previous version (5.0) then ouch.
And yes actorX is only for non-ple.

There are more up to date Actor X's out there. I know this because I am using Maya 6.0 with a actor X for it, but I'm also not using a PLE version.

Milkshape can import a few of the types that can be exported out of Maya and it can also export to unreal, for the (30 day?) trial I'm pretty sure you get all the features for milkshape and its less than $50 if end up wanting to buy it.

Milkshape's UI sucks however, also you can not export ut2k4 models with weights, so your deformation will always look horrible.

Well, that sucks. :( Looks like the only real answer is to get the retail version of Maya or get someone else to export the model :p

Dittoed. Milkshape's really only good for playing around with models, editing meshes and little else.
You could try UDN http://udn.epicgames.com/ for an ActorX that will work with PLE though it's been a while since I've been there to know if there is one. Just search for ActorX and you'll find a few versions there.

That's where I got it, there's no versions for PLE.

Thanks to this thread (http://forums.beyondunreal.com/showthread.php?p=1998719), I was able to bring a character into UT2004. I have one question, though:
How do I create a .psk file for uPaint?

You can't with maya PLE to Unreal ed is really the only thing you can do.
I've tried to find way to get it into Paint but I couldn't find a way and I was told by othere this is impossible too.
You will have to map your UV's and texture it in a program like photoshop. UV mapping is really boring but its pretty easy to do.

Get Maya 7 PLE, and activation code for it. Then go to UDN and get ActorX plugin for Maya 7.

That's for the complete version of Maya, not the PLE.
Can ActorX make .psk files, or something?

ActorX might have updated. I have used it in a long time. I use maya 6.0 so I don't know aobut 7 PLE or anything.

actorx makes your psk and psa files, however that plugin is for the commercial version of maya only.
MayaPLE will only export directly to UED. Its part of its limitations so you can't really make commercial products with just PLE.
