Hey guys (and gals)! There haven't been many (read: any) community-released maps in a while and so I though I'd stir you into doing some more work - so I don't have to ;)

Basically what'll happen is if you put your name down in this thread by Christmas you become part of the Community Mapping Project. To enter reply with what skills you have (mapping is required, but other stuff like modelling etc. can help to make the project great, and will help me in organizing you lot into a focused team too) and what part of mapping you like most/specialize in (e.g. layout, lighting, particles, etc) and a contact email address (replace the @ symbol with "AT" if you're afraid of being picked up by spam-mail spiders). Then I'll organise you lot into a team - hopefully putting each person into a position where they can do the bit they truly like.

Firstly we'll vote on a theme, once the team is formed I'll get you guys to send me theme ideas and we vote for them. Then once everyone's voted you all can submit layout drawings/images and I'll plop em on the forums for us to vote on. We'll probably be working on a rally map - since that style of map can incorporate large numbers of developers and keep them busy - and also it does't have many maps for it. With a layout and theme we can all get started on mapping.

Each of you will be assigned a "piece" - it is recommended that the person in charge of one section communicates and swaps screens with the people in charge of the adjacent pieces to ensure continuity - and will get to work. Obviously if you need certain resources you can ask for them and maybe someone on the team with the necessary talent will be able to assist.

If somebody drops out (you can at any point if you wish) then I'll do my best to reallocate the map sections so that those with the spare time can also take up that section. If this is impossible, I'll take over their section and continue, that person will still get credit for their work.

Finally when it's finished you'll send your sections to me and I'll paste them together, we'll playtest them and then offer crits and feedback and modify again.

When we are all satisfied I'll put all your names in the readme and in the map description and I'll upload it to the fileworks ftp and the next version of UnWheel.

I want to emphasize that this will be your project and not ours, and unless conditions out of my control intervene, I will do no work on it apart from amalgamation (based strictly on your layout) and organizing you - possibly with design and editor advice - but not physical influence on the map.

So - submissions end on December 24th at 23:59 GMT and the team will be formulated by the New Year - barring any problems. It'll be great to watch this project unfold.

Sound's like a good idea. I was thinking of making a map once the new version comes out. I can map, and thats all, I like making layout most, and terrain.

One idea I had for a map that could be made is a downhill race down a mountain, starting in a snow area, going through a forest area, and ending at the bottom in farmland or whatever. And each person could do a certain area. I think the best way to join peoples pieces of the map would be through narrow areas such as tunnels or bridges, that way the change in map style would be less noticeable.

I guess i could make some map models up! I could make a track mesh up in max, if some one would like to drawup a layout or we could try and make a real world section of country road. I am thinking of a track that you might find in something like Burnout or needforspeed.

OK, so we got a few people interested, but not really enough. So, it's up to you to generate interest, we're looking at five people working on this minimum, so post the info on forums, IRC, your own web-pages, through the doors of people you particularly don't like - repeatedly. First person to get banned / a restraining order for spamming wins!
