I wouldn't have the patience either.. well, not anymore...

Does anyone remember that spiderman game, from 1991? Spiderman has to save Mary Jane from Mysterio. Never finished it, it wasn't bad though.

Its basically cheating, savestates let you save wherever you want. It is doing something that the game doesn't allow.

Most speedruns can usually be done in one piece, without a person needing to chop it up into bits, especially those that have been done to death (Quake, for example). However, there are some cases where certain people can do certain parts faster than others. That's where save states come in. Though I haven't watched the video, the likelihood an NES game was done with savestates isn't unlikely, but it's tough to hide too. Quake, like most PC games nowadays, has its levels chopped into individual files so people can easily access open them and then it's just a matter of editing them together.

Here (http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/WhyAndHow.html) is a page explaining speedruns involving emulators and savestates.

There are still those who record a speedrun the "pure" way, using a video camera and a TV/monitor, but most now use emulators or frame hacks.
