The chronicles of BuF needs a poll. What event/poster/thing came along to off-topic/BU first?

Shock whores. They came from the launch day of Unreal (as long as you're talking about BuF history).

Wouldn't dopefish have come out the same day?

That doesn't make any sense.
Everyone knows I suck at shock combos.
Now, ask me about my free goo injections or hammer/shield pwnage. ;)
Literally speaking, when BuF came into existence, the concept of shock whores, hot carls, and uber l33tness came with it, as well as myself, phil, and tool.

Are we counting the old days of PuF before BuF?

What did PuF stand for?
HEATHEN!
That would be "PlanetUnreal Forums". You should review your history of PuF/BuF. I'm amazed you've been here for so long without learning that :p

Kinda strange, I checked there a year ago and I had an identical account there even though they were using thier own crappy software. D:

If we were there during the days of PuF, all our accounts and posts while we were there are still there, I think...
Edit: Just logged in now. Apparently I had two PM's (they were identical) that were sitting there since November 2001 that I didn't read until now. :p

Right, history lesson.
PuF was PlanetUnreal Forums, correct. PlanetUnreal was run at the time by QAPete and others. "PuF" was a tag thought up by BadAss to help people on the forums find each other in-game. Only later did it became synonymous with the forums and community it created.
In 2001, GameSpy got pushy. It attempted to push it's own (very poor) ForumPlanet software onto PU (along with numerous other things). This was the final straw for Pete and the PU staff crew. BU had been an idea in the background for a while, but was then brought to life.
The PU forums, in their entirety were copied (not moved) over to the beyondunreal.com domain and restarted under the new banner and using vBulletin software. QAPete and the vast majority of the PU staff resigned and moved onto BeyondUnreal. For a while it remained the forums only while the site was being created. The cpommunity backed BU, and the entire PU forum user base moved to BU en mass, effectively wiping out PU's community on the spot. The PU forums switched to the ForumPlanet system. Take a look on there for a good idea as to how popular the FP system was/is...
BU the site was created, and overnight replaced PU as the U/UT/UE site. PuF seamlessly reformed as BuF.
And they lived (almost) happily ever after...

Hi Hyrulian Hero (h.h.),
This is Chris Lambert (aka Stallion) from PlanetUnreal. You're receiving this message because you joined our forum community sometime during the past three years, and have been an active visitor in the previous month.
The purpose of this email is to inform you of the new home for the PlanetUnreal Forum community: BeyondUnreal.
As you may know, PlanetUnreal is hosted by GameSpy Industries, the company responsible for GameSpy Arcade, FilePlanet, and ForumPlanet. Over the past few months, GameSpy has been pressuring PlanetUnreal to switch to their proprietary ForumPlanet software. This software is slower, less robust, and lacking many of the features currently available on vBulletin (the program that has powered PuF for over a year). As a result of this, the PlanetUnreal team has been resisting the switch to ForumPlanet. However, GameSpy Industries decided to go behind the community’s back and proceed with the ForumPlanet transition despite strong disapproval from an overwhelming majority of those who use the forums on a daily basis.
We felt we had no other choice than to separate the forums from GameSpy and run them independently. BeyondUnreal is doing just that. With the help of QAPete, Zaccix, Prophetus, hal, alien8, Sparky, Morety, rojazz, Boom, Yellow5, & MalHavoc – we have put together a new site on a new server with a new connection at a new address.
We hope you’ll follow us to our new home, at http://www.beyondunreal.com/ and join in with the rest of the community who’s already getting comfortable.
Thank you for your time,
Chris Lambert

Wow, I went to PU and PUF today, just to have a look see. Memories! It was kinda sad to see the forums and the site in general where they are...but...that's how it is.

I'd like to think hot carls came first.
1000 posts... BuF is the first forum I've made it over 200 posts I think; I'm glad I came here after INA (Atari). Here's to many more BuF years. After the holocaust it'll be the forums the cockroaches all use and they'll probably talk about tiny cockroach hot carls... what a thought.

Ah the days of blue default forumage...was PuF blue? I can't remember now, seems like a ridiculously long time ago...I'm glad i came in time for the great change-over, it was like the typical 'little guy standing up to the big guy' movie storyline, although with forums. It'd make a ****e movie, but being there was cool!

Hehe, I remember the message. Or rather I don't, I had the mail message box unchecked, so I never got the message, had to find out second-hand :)

I don't remember that. Maybe because I just joined. I like being a youngster. Gamespy is and will always be the maker of crapy software. I remember many great game's multiplayer lobbys being ruined because of gamespy. But I always liked the Age of Mythology and Diablo 2 lobbys. I didn't like the whole server thing and was confused when my friend showed me counter strike on that dreadful day. I was like, why can't I host a game like I did in my RTS days. Then I saw the light on a cloudy day in cyberstop. I played UT2k4 and became obessed with vehicles. Then I joined BUF. That sums up my short youngster life. That was a waste of time typing crap that no one cares about.
