People have already started getting their Xbox 360 games, and the system comes out on November 22nd. Next week, either Monday or Tuesday at the earliest people who won a system in the mountain dew contest will be getting their systems.
I didn't really care that much at first for the xbox 360, despite loving my Xbox. But since i'm getting one in December i'm pretty excited now. That and the system is almost here, so a lot more infomation is known about it. And its brand new and exciting, and has to do with video games, so whats there not to be excited about?
This is the best buy launch day list of games:
Amped 3
Activision Call of Duty 2
Sega Condemned
EA FIFA 2006: Road To The FIFA World
Activision Gun
Microsoft Kameo Elements of Power
Peter’s Jackson’s King Kong
Madden NFL 2006
NBA 2K6
NBA Live 2006
Need For Speed Most Wanted
Perfect Dark Zero
Perfect Dark Zero (Limited Edition)
Project Gotham Racing 3
Quake 4
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2006
Tony Hawk: American Wasteland
Very good list, all the EA Sports games got huge graphic overhauls from their current gen counter parts. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2006 and Madden 06 look incredible. But out of all those Xbox 360 games, NBA 2k6 is by far the best looking one graphically so far. I hope condemned comes out for the PC, but as far as I know its a xbox 360 exclusive.
If you get a Xbox 360 on launch day please take pics. Ooh and the Xbox 360 is actually much smaller then the Xbox, but still big for a console.

I'm a little baffled by games coming out before the console. Was there a reason they did that? Supply? Marketing? Why not just sandbag a couple weeks and release them with the console?

I couldn't find a answer for that either, I think it might be because originally the Xbox 360 was suppose to come out November 15th and a whole bunch of publishers set their games for that date.

Ooh god yes, this is the game i'm looking forward to the most. Disappointed in the number of cars however (only 90), but they are real good cars!
"Each car has taken seven weeks to complete so no minute detail has been overlooked. The interiors, exteriors, and all mechanical parts have been accurately modeled and textured with specs provided directly from the car manufacturers. Each of the cars in the game were put on dynos to nail down the proper specs, plus individual microphones were attached to over 200 different sections of the car to capture the true sound of every mechanical element as they make sweet music together."
Given that amount of detail they are putting into just the cars, I am amazed they managed to get 90 into the game  The environments in that game are insaine. They said it's going to be a little more realistic, but still keeping the arcade flavor which is good. I never got to play PGR2 on xbox live because I didn't feel like paying for xbox live. Now that you get it "free" with 360, that's just one more reason for me to want this game.

Teh graphix r purty. And thats about it.
I dunno, the 360 seems to me to be the least exciting of all the next gen consoles. The PS3 seems is better as far as tech, and the Revolution is better as far as innovation. I don't see anything special with the 360 more than an upgraded Xbox. Can someone attempt to enlighten me?

Their online component looks very good. Live now has integration between the GamerTag and the XBox website, lots more game info integration, you can be watching a DVD and someone on your friends list might pop up a chat window or say "hey, I'm in a Halo 7 game" or something, plus the wireless connection to PCs, especially with Windows Media Center...
... if there's one thing I'd say you could be excited about, it's the huge amount of work that went into the online component. It's very robust.

I have always had the "I get the same thing on my PC" feeling from the XBox strategy, so I get what you're saying there. I'm just saying as the consoles go, it seems to have the most to offer (I forgot about Live Arcade which is going to have a number of smaller games which may draw some more independent material), and they went to great lengths to do a lot with it. Which makes sense because Live has easily been the biggest draw XBox had; that and Halo saved it from permanent irrelevance and made it the #2 console. But as you said, PC gamers may find that they already get this experience playing PC games and using the PC intarweb.

I wonder if there will be any reason to use Xlink Kai now that Live! comes in a free flavor. Once softmod hacks and modchips are out, I could see a use for it, but as of right now, nah.
And that's assuming that Kai will be 360 friendly.

I enjoy realism in games, I enjoy unrealistic games. I'd just like to see more mainstream games that implement realistic physics engines, realistic models, etc. I understand there is a large amount of games that would be stoopid if they were more realistic(UT2004), but I just want more console games that aren't so arcadey it is stupid. Only 3 original games (Gun, Condemned and Kameo) in that list ???
And just 1 if you ignore multiplatform-titles like Gun and Condemned ...
NFS:MW is sort of fun (at least the demo was), but I can't help feeling that it's a bit empty on the inside.
I'm still convinced that I did the good thing by not pre-ordering the 360.
I just hope that the multi-media-features don't require XP or the Mediacrap-edition to use. In fact it's that part of the 360-specs that makes me consider buying one (in the future).
The games themselves are pretty lame and boring considering that any EA-title will be multiplatform and the rest of them are mere sequels with one or two exceptions.

Meh, don't expect release games to be original or good. Never buy a system when it gets released if you want great games off the bat. you always have to hope that in the future there will be good games. I bought my PSP not long after release, and the first game I bought blew donkey nuts. Luckily homebrew kept me interested until I could get Burnout legneds, and then GTA. But anyways, release titles suck. Its a scientifically proven fact.

While I will get one, and I think I'll have a good time, there is nothing on the list that makes me all that hot and bothered. If I had to pick one, I'd say Condemned, just because of the potential. Most solid goes to Kameo, just because I <3 Rare. PDZ looks decent (yeah, wicked weapons...and no jumping...I'm not one to question design decisions at Rare, but..you can't even go off edges...wtf?) Besides that, nothing does it for me.
Oh, and the car thing. Guess what. Same thing since Gran Turismo 3. I remember reading that same interview...5 years ago.

As for the whole xbox 360 launch, only one title impresses me and thats Perfect Dark Zero, only because ive played the N64 one. 360 games are also launching at 60 buckers which is something I havent seen since the N64 days. I doubt it will affect sales, but then again stranger things have happened.

Ever since i've seen the screenshots i started to wonder what would happen. The serious side of pd have now more colors and "cover feature" More traps for the ai. I also noticed the weapon sound don't changed. Maybe they are beta? If you look at the unreal engine presentations, they always use the same god damn jumping and walking sounds in their presentations. They just wanted to bring up "more action" for PDZ. Well, i won't be the first one to cry out loud if they put REAL fps shotter control. Since the "L to Aim" was pretty doll. Well acording the n64 controller it was ok.
Comon, admit the true side of PD was those Funny AI that react like in Golden eye when you shot 'em up. But have a lot improved.

It uses 3 CPU's and requires a completely new programming language to make games for. The 360 is much harder to program for, and all the launch titles and games coming out this year were made on a beta SDK.

Not to mention that as far as I know, none of them actually utilize multi-core programming at this point. So the presence of multiple CPU's is not necessarily translating into use of the design yet.

Xbox 360 games will start doing it for sure, but as far as things like PC games go there is nothing. I remember years ago people getting excited over multiple CPU's and how it would revolutionize gaming on the PC. But it never caught on, and now we got 64-bit CPU's to basically do the samething.

Heh, I remember what Epic said about multiprocessing (and as a result, multicore) systems and UT2k4. The only separation would be the sound code; you would have the sound and music code running on one CPU, and everything else on another. Not that great. :p

Yeah, I think "for sure" is a little premature at this point. It's a fair bet that it will happen, but the problem is that programmers just haven't figured out what to do with all these resources yet. So I'm left wondering why they're cramming so much power hardware into a machine and charging you $400 and up for it and they're not even able to program for it at this point.
Look on the bright side, though, by the time they start doing multi-core games, and all the games worth having are actually certified as backwards-compatible, your so-called pre-order may actually come in! :D

whoa, EA Sports really gayed up their sports games.
Here's a rough scenario: you pass to your receiver near the sideline. He jumps up to catch it, comes down, and gets pushed out of bounds. You don't get the yards. It looked to you as if he came down on the field with both feet in bounds before he got pushed. So, as you would do in the current-gen Madden game, you hit pause and go to challenge the play. The only thing is, there's no challenge option.
And tiger woods 2006 is missing golfers and courses, and NBA Live 2006 doesnt have a franchise mode. What the hell? Sports titles are looking like they are out of the question, which is incredibly disappointing. Next years sports titles though are going to be awsome.

From the Bungie site:
Do I need Xbox Live?
To play Halo 2 on Xbox Live, you will need a current Xbox Live or Xbox Live Gold account. To activate the “hi-res” modes of Halo and Halo 2, for Xbox Live members (either Gold or Silver members), just connect your Xbox 360 console to Xbox Live and insert an original Xbox game. The system will automatically check if you have the latest emulation software, download it to your Xbox 360 console as part of a system update if you don't, reboot, and start loading your original Xbox game.
Those who are not part of the Xbox Live network will be able to download the emulators from Xbox.com, and burn them onto a CD to insert into your Xbox 360 where it will auto-install the emulator. Or you can go to Xbox.com and simply sign up for a CD to be sent to your home for a nominal shipping and handling fee.
What about my existing Xbox Live account?
All current Xbox Live accounts transfer seamlessly to Xbox 360 as Xbox Live Gold accounts. You'll keep your Gamertag and the friends, stats, and reputation that you've built up over the years.
So can an Xbox play Halo 2 against and Xbox 360? Or System Link with the original Halo?
Yes. Both games can interoperate between 360 and Xbox, Xbox and Xbox, or 360 and 360. No special cable is required for the 360 – either Ethernet or crossover (System Link) Ethernet will work, even when connecting a 360 to an Xbox.
So you can play on Live. Dee dee dee!

What I may do is buy a Rev and talk Damage into buying a 360 or maybe a PS3, and we can split time playing the two different consoles. I made a Nintendo convert out of him a while back (Goldeneye made a convincing argument) and he dumped his Playstation for an N64, then Cube, and now we both have a Cube which is sort of cool, but I ended up buying an old used PS1 for myself to play Tekken and MGS and Final Fantasy, and we both end up grumbling about games that don't get ported (or get ported 6 months later, like MK Deception or Lego Star Wars). If we are our own two most common game-playing partners, it might make more sense for the two of us to get different consoles. Especially since he has XP Media Center and could benefit from the streaming crap.

I kinda wanted to do a multi-core response, because, hey, I do graphics programming, and some game programming (and I've looked at multi-core architecture).
-As for multi-core stuff, while the PS2 isn't technically multi-core, some basic ideas of seperating threads and processing them seperately were certainly used. So while we may not be terrific, we're getting better. And if you give programmers a couple more, I think we'll make some great headway.
-Kinda now, we do a little multi-core programming, as in usage of the GPU. I've worked on a few game projects (small, homebrew, just to learn), and in those, we abstracted our game logic from our graphics. We'd process all our game data, then reflect any changes in the graphics. So what we were doing was using the CPU to handle the game logic, and the GPU on the graphics. I'd guess this is how it works with anything else (and as far as Renderware goes, same idea).
-The problem, as I see it, is familiarizing oneself with the architecture of the multi-processors. Maybe it is because of experience, but seperating graphics from logic isn't too bad. But say I tried to...process my collision detection on one core, and then my AI on another. I'm not terribly sure how I'd do that with a multi-processor system. And say some of my AI depended on collisions as part of their behaviour, I'd imagine it might be pain in the ass to try to communicate those changes. While ideally, you could process them seperately without needing each other, that wouldn't be the case (say shooting an enemy causes it to hide). Now I have to make the AI aware of collisions going on, and if they are running in seperate threads...well...shiat. Like HH said, the easiest thing I can think of is seperating sound. Maybe you could seperate some AI functions into one processor, and keep the functions that depend on collisions in the same thread. But then you see how confusing things can get!
-Low-level programming. I'm not sure what kind of support that Microsoft has provided for their stuff, but I wouldn't venture out and say that it is a new language entirely, at least for the high level stuff. But you can't do all your game stuff (or I'd hope not...some of the fun is going assembly!) at a high level. I'd imagine the multi-core assembly must be a pain in the dick to orient yourself with. Also on that note, I'd also guess that the MS tools probably don't fully take advantage of the multi-core stuff either.
Good news though. As programmers, we are inherently smarter than you (;)), so the deliciousness is on its way.
EDIT: Also, the chip ATi made for the 360 has a pretty different implementation, especially in the shader "array" (not just a pipeline anymore I guess). Ive done some quick reading on it, and it is pretty neat in idea, but it kinda operates on the DirectX idealogy, breaking off from the OpenGL style.

People are already getting their Xbox 360's now and reviews are starting to come in.
Project Gotham Racing 3 got a 10/10 over at 1up.com and IGN.com
Most of the 360 games so far are getting around a 8. Not bad for launch titles. 6 months from now I think the list of 360 games are going to be amazing.
And in other very good news Final Fantasy XIII might be on the xbox 360 and playstation 3.
I'm going to wait till the reviews come in when it's more established myself. still don't know if i'll even get a next gen console, as all i use mine for now is playing tekken and soul calibur when mates come round

I dunno how much of this is true, but the guy at EB said that there is going to be major shortages of Xbox 360's because Microsoft decided to send a whole lot of units over to Europe and Japan so they can release them over there on the same day. My friend who preordered October 1st might be looking at a January pickup date. And according to the guy working there only the first 26(!) people who preordered will be getting the console on release day. How the hell is everyone affording a $400 console? lol I figured most kids would be forced to wait for Christmas leaving some consoles available but nooo...
Depending on how good PD0 is, I might consider buying the 360, but otherwise there isn't really any other games that interest me at the moment.

Actually, there are going to be major shortages because they scaled down production to artificially inflate the demand for the console. Makes all those "we're getting 50 and you're #51" people quite cheerful I'm sure.
And as much as you may enjoy PD, I'd say Kameo will be 10x better.

Go to your supermarket homeslice! I don't know if you have Fry's up in WA, but any supermarket has them in the frozen food section. I'll literally buy like 5 or 6 dollars worth at a time, and I can have lunch for a couple weeks on that. Get some hot sauce, and you are set. Actually, you can get pretty decent frozen food that isn't bad for you. The store brand Hot Pockets are $1.66 for two, and that makes for a good change of pace. Also, there was sale for Totino's Party Pizzas (about a small-medium pizza...makes for two servings) that were a dollar apiece. I bought 10 and I had 20 servings of pizza for 10 bucks.

According to IGN:
Q: What is the Cell?
A: The Cell processor was co-designed by IBM, Toshiba and Sony. Configurations can differ, but here's what the PS3's Cell chip will be like:
PowerPC-based Core @ 3.2GHz
7 SPEs @ 3.2GHz
512KB L2 Cache
7 x 256KB SRAM for SPEs
Basically, a single Cell processor is designed to act like multiple processors working together, or even independently. A Cell processor has a single PowerPC Architecture Unit (PAU) and multiple Synergistic Processing Elements (SPEs). A Cell's PAU dolls out instructions to its various SPEs, which can then independently work on tasks. So for instance, one SPU might be programmed to run a game's AI while another handles physics. Since each one acts independently, multiple calculations can be done simultaneously. In other words, it's very powerful. In fact, it's powerful enough to perform 218 GFLOPS.

never mind then, I was wrong. Now I get what this all is and what it means. I'm not a apple person so I never bothered to figure out what all this crap means.
But I thought there was a PowerPC? Not just a CPU, but an actual computer from Apple called the PowerPC? And then there was the G-Series computers.
W0RF
16th Nov 2005, 02:05 PM
They released a line of Mac PowerPCs (named PowerMacs) when they went from Motorla 680x0 architecture to IBM's PowerPC architecture. It was a naming convention based on the new processors. The G-line was simply a renaming, like WinME was still a Win9x OS, XP is still an NT OS, or any number or renaming conventions that the graphics card companies undergo every year or so. Technically, even the G3s and G4s are named PowerMac G3 etc.
PowerPC is the name of IBM's processors that power Macs, many of the recent consoles, many servers, basically anything where IBM is still working on hardware. Much like Intel has their x86/Pentium processors and AMD has their Athlon processors.
As I said before, Mac is starting a migration to Intel architecture so even as MS seems to make their consoles more like a G-Mac, Apple is making their machines more like a Windows platform. The world is upside-down.
