View Full Version : Fed up with BT? Some of your other options are....

Well, with time and space being relative, if we get enough people concentrating really hard we should be able to remove BT from our current space time continum and put it into someone elses.

/me has a sneaking suspicious feeling that this has already been done and that BT originally came from a time/place/dimension/reality where the nazis had won the war

Zaccix where did you get that info? Does this mean we can't host UT servers on ADSL though we can (for about...oooh one person) on our sh1tty 56k connections?

Another thing people. All these other companies - if they want to do ADSL - have to pay BT to rent the lines/use the exchanges etc, as BT is the one that actually owns the loop.
What contention ratio are the US people on?
As zaccix mentioned for £40/month we get 512down/256up on a 50:1 ratio. Nildram is offering a 20:1 ratio (which they have to buy from BT :() at the following prices

BT have now admitted that multiplayer game hosting will not be possible with their ADSL service, due to a firewall being installed. A cable-style 50:1 sharing ratio will also be used (meaning that the bandwidth in your local area will be shared between all the users in that area).

This means us UK gamers will no doubt want to look at other options. Some of these options are:

Claranet (http://www.clara.net/dialup/accounts/adsl/) - This is the company that runs it's own service and FreeUK. It's been a consistently good performer over the years and no doubt their ADSL service will be good.

Virgin.net (http://www.virgin.net/) - They've just launched an 0800 service called Stop The Clock, and will be offering ADSL soon.

Nildram (http://www.getadsl.co.uk/) - The first alternative to BT Openworld, Nildram announced their ADSL service before BT officially did.

Freeserve Time (http://www.freeserve.com/time/) - The original free UK ISP, Freeserve are now doing a range of fixed-price packages, including Freeserve Time Unlimited, their £10/month for 24/7 dialup net access package.

NTL (http://www.askntl.com/) - A huge company, NTL offers cable modem access if your area is on their network.

If anyone else knows of any other companies in the UK doing ADSL or fixed-price unlimited access, post here and let us know!

Don't forget telewest.
They offered the first flatrate in the UK "Surf Unlimited". Also i think they do cable, but don't quote me on that.

Surf Unlimited kicks *** , I use that, 24/7 and good pings. :)

cable modems soon as well, though at £50 its a bit pricey. :(

Actually, I've got no problems with World Online - pings are about a good as I could get with 56k, connections are stable, and fifteen quid a month for 24/7 (including phone line rental) ain't bad.

I was with Localtel before WO bought them out, so perhaps that makes a difference.

I'm rapidly going off the idea of ADSL at present - it seems awfully expensive (`specially if you can't run a server), and to be honest I have better things to spend 40 quid a month on. At least with cable, you can get your phone and cable TV chucked in as well...Trouble is, I'll be lucky if i get cabled in the first half of the decade.

Yeah Hertson.
Everything was peachy with Localtel. When WOL took over, I didn't find out for another week. I realised my connection had fallen to pieces on the Monday and had stayed that way for the entire week. I then decide to read my mail. There was a letter from WOL stating that they had taken over Localtel since Monday.... that figures :(
