I know nothing about the man, but he certainly must have had balls the size of church bells. I respect that.

Ray Holmes, a World War II fighter pilot who rammed a German plane to prevent a direct hit on Buckingham Palace, died on Monday in Wirral, in northwest England. He was 90.

His death followed a two-year battle with cancer, said his wife, Anne.

Mr. Holmes, a pilot from 504 Squadron who was a sergeant at the time, spotted a German Dornier bomber lining up to attack the palace on Sept. 15, 1940, and, finding he had run out of ammunition, slammed into the bomber, slicing off its tail

Many foreigners and even young British people don't measure accurately the huge amounts of courage and determination that were necessary, in addition to the LUCK (and help from radars), to win the Battle of England. I think we can safely assume this man's life and accomplishments did testify for all these.

The Battle of Britain must have been truly spectacular. Even if the english Spitfires had a bit of an avantage on the german Stukas in terms of manouevrability, the planes can't be compared with what exists now and the piloting was rough. The pilots of the time really were exceptional people in terms of ability but also in bravery in the sheer will to defend their country.

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."

RIP.
