In case you were wondering how your planned dual 7800 GTX system would run current games, like Unreal Tournament 2004, VR-Zone has an article and a number of benchmarks to browse through. The UT2004 benchmark makes it pretty clear that running the CPU-bound UT2004 with a dual 7800 GTX setup is akin to fishing in a pond with dynamite.

Having recently gotten a 6800 SLI system, I'm glad to see that I'm not already obselete - the 7800 didn't give a huge boost over the 6800 :)

You know, i was wondering about how the 7800 would run UT2004. It was keeping me up nights, just thinking about would it be in the 80's or the 90's, or would it even be in the mid 100s? Then there's the whole resolution thing, and the detail settings, which totally change the framerate. But now, I can finally sleep at night. Thank you.

*sigh of releif*

So two GPU's score lower than one.. The lazyness of programmers to make use of GPU power (apart from AA AF *yawn* ) isnt it?... CPU is what counts most. (For UT2k4 and HL2 at least. Didn't look at other engines results.)
Sad.

November can't get here fast enough. That's the time I find buying computers and computer parts at it's cheapest. And if I get a new rig that'll be when I do it.

Those who grab these graphics cards the day they come out are out of their minds. $600 for one card? Insane. Plus you'll most likely need a new power source and cooling system to back it up.

PS, I like that fishing with dynamite comment. Very nice

Heh, thanks.

I was reading that they are recommending a 500W PSU to start for a 7800 setup. Of course, UT2004 isn't the game to see what the card can do.

Wrong hal, they are recommending a 300W PSU for a 7800, a 500W only if you plan to SLI it. It has a much better cooling system then the last few generations of cards

Like Hal said, I wouldn't read too much into the UT2k4 numbers for SLI and single card, or comparisons to the 6800. I'd be more interested in UE3 benches rather than 1-2 yr old game benches.

I also note that the 7800 SLI systems and the 6800 SLI systems were pretty much the same. The 7800 did give a boost - but not a really huge one. I can live with being 6-8 fps lower for now :)

From the many charts I saw, there wasn't much a difference betwen the 7800 SLI and the single 7800. It seems the 7800 alone is also better than the 7800 SLI....

But that's just because most of the tests that they ran ended up being cpu bottlenecked. Also note that dual SLI consumes CPU cycles. So, the benefits aren't readily apparent until you see them run on super high-res with loads of AA/AF with a very strong CPU.

I'd like to see the SLI performance on a game that takes advantage of a dual core CPU or multiple processors. Like grimstar said, the benches are worthless. Besides, the fps isn't going to matter much, it's the visual quality, or at least the fps at high resolutions with AA on. Those numbers would be relevant.

Besides, the 7800GTX is clearly a next gen card. Why the heck buy it right away unless you are one of the above mentioned people?

not for current games, but for future games, single 7800 will outperform the SLI 6800

But I recommend getting a new card when Unreal 3 engine games are actually released, sometime 2006. In summer 2006, there will be new cards available, or at least, upgraded 7800s.

Exactly. I don't see why anyone would buy a card like that when there are no games that will take advantage of its capabilities. UT2004 is processor limited (and has been for the 6800 series as well). I've never understood people who buy the out of the price-gouged top two or three in the ladder.

I'm waiting till the day UT2007 comes out to buy my next card. I haven't heard of any non-UE3 or Doom3 engine games that would need that card. By then the 7800gtx or something with even better performance probably come down to $250 or less :D

There's a little silcone valley graphics company with a secret bomb......no SLI needed, just one secret formula they have inside their little black box. They won't open that little black box till next year and when they do it will have a major impact on every graphics card that's beeing marketed right this moment.....

Can you figure out who it is?
