View Full Version : New map thema ?

It s not that industrial, Gothic, spaceworld, modern egyptian or whatever traditional FPS themas are bad but I think that something fresh and new would not be a bad idea either...

In my opinion because of their cultural backgrounds, the different variety of lanscapes they lived in, their incredible architectures, their bloody Gods and rites, their costumes, their artistic language, their mysteries... I guess that some kind of modern Aztecs/ Zapotecs/ Mayans/ Olmecs/ Toltecs/ Mixtecs cultures could be something very interesting to introduce in UT2007.

I would be very interested to know what kind of new thema you d like to see in UT2007 and why?

Urban still needs a lot of work IMO. The cityscapes you've seen in UT from 99 up through present really just look like contemporary cities, and I think a well- executed Unreal universe urban theme would add a lot of flavor. Naturally I'm thinking of a sort of high- tech down- and- out cultural mishmash a- la Blade Runner (complete with street signs in an unrecognizable alien language), but regardless of how it pans out I feel there's a missed opportunity there.

Also, classic Arabic archetecture. That may be a little iffy given the current political/ cultural climate, but all the same it's a great look. CTF-CBP2-Bahera is the only UT map I've seen so far to utilize that.

Some streets or urban oriented maps would be very cool.
Strangely in DM, this obvious thema was not in UT2k3 and UT2k4

Maybe we will be lucky to visit Skaarjtown, Juggernaut City or GenMoKai Harbor in some few monthes, who knows?

I would like to play in my neighborhood. If they could have a satelite go over & photograph the ground & then a jet fly over & get the countours of the ground & houses & such, we could have huge battles in our back yards. That would be awesome! very expensive, but still very cool

I don't want to see any more ruined cities/scrapyards ,it's been done to death!

Japanese/asian culture could be an interesting theme for UT, with izanzgi and space ninjas included

Also some super hi tech levels ala DM Fractal/Cybrosis or CTF Niven (with no added rust!!)
Or a living breathing futuristic city with traffic in the background, robots doing their thing and gigantic monitor screen watching the tourney!

How'bout mixing arabic/persian art with the egyptian theme creating a more interesting hybrid or sum interesting sites on the nakhti planet

They didn't include enough quality space maps in ut2kx, and you can't really have the unreal universe without outerspace/wierd alien planets!

I basically think epic should push the idea of just how technongically advanced the furture is, sine they can bring contestants back from death and all!

Anyone here every read the Chung Kuo Series of books by David Wingrove?

and what i miss from UT are the underwater themes, and some swamp and jungle levels.

I'd kind of like to see a "poverty in the future" type of theme (dumb name, but anyway).

What gave me the idea was the current underdeveloped red- brick theme you see on maps like DM-Rankin and VCTF-AggressiveAlleys. That theme is more or less suggestive to me of a run- down, out- of- luck midwestern USA city or town say ca. 1970- present and I'd love to see it fully developed with decos etc.

Then I got to thinking... surely there are run- down, out- of- luck human mining/ industrial settlements on backwater planets in the hardnosed 2400s of the Unreal Universe. The building materials would be different, the derelect tech would be different, but some of it would be recognizable as very much the same situation -- think "Fat Gkublok's Discount Bot Repair" or the farm from the original Star Wars.

Such settlements (including the modern- era ones) would be natural targets for Liandri arena- buyers as they could likely be picked up for a song and would be good arenas without much modification -- I'm suspecting that's what happened to Rankin.

Plus it looks cool IMO and has good, Mad Max- style atmosphere. Settings could be either small- urban or rural.

Re: Ol' West. I like that too, as long as it's expanded to include stuff that doesn't necessarily indicate cowboys and indians. Badlands- style landscapes, adobe architecture and a southwest- oriented color scheme could look really cool. And of course, vultures circling in the skybox. :D

Me too, I love destroyed cities, like in WWII, and also A LOT maps with "nature/forest" stuff like, water, leaf, tree, rain, light through forests and all this beautiful ****.

I suggest you try 1on1-Tangora in UT2004, best theme map I ever saw.

Heh... yeah, it sounds kooky. But maybe repackage that as "vintage sci- fi horror" and you might be onto something.

Of course, it would involve heavy borrowings from the Gothic stuff that's been done and done, but take CurseIV and Peak and throw them into a blender with '50s- style flying saucers, that electric thingy with the spark between the two antennae, wierd experimental creatures/ robots in vats of green slime and some pipe organ and theremin layered over a catchy techno beat... maybe an ambient sound of Vincent Price cackling maniacally... hey, it could work.

I find the fair ground would give you an excust to have Mr Crow as a character!
What is the unreal excuse for having that , this is a wierd parrallel universe, innerverse psychic, metaphysical realm, coexisting with the purgatory world, the nighmares rule this realm_______the land of lost souls, fallen angels and where innocence of youth was corrupted! or so i hear........................

OK, here's my wierdest one yet. Get ready.

The arenas in this theme are the ruins of a mysterious, extinct, and highly developed alien civilization... the aliens themselves were humanoid in shape, maybe kind of like the famous Gray aliens you see all over the place. The kicker is, the overall look of the culture is a kind of parody/ distortion of Soviet- style art and architecture.

So you have big, impressive statues of gray aliens posed like Lenin and Stalin, and social- realist posters of the noble proletarian gray alien steadfastly operating his weather control device in the service of The People, etc. etc.

I don't know what that means and don't care to speculate. It just kind of came to me, and I thought it would look cool in a Star Trek/ alternate universe kind of way. Plus I always thought Soviet art was funny. :con:

Thats a very different idea, like it!
How bout futuristic neo fascism possibly in the NEG with a neo classical/helenistic sculpture with very strange imagery of fierce animals ie lions, eagles, soldiers and leaders

only very angular, rigid and geometric, almost verging on cubism but really terrifying,
possibly on a dead world, with propagandistic slogans graphittied onto a wall saying" the leader know all" and so on, and portraits/sculptures of this leader everywhere, ............basically really scary stuff based on 1930's germany/italy but with a modern twist...

If not that the second cold war could be a theme, Only different powers are at work here, possibly an intercolonial struggle between planets!

If not that, i seen a map done on a venice theme recently

a map on the theme could be brilliant depending on how its executed, have all narrow back alleys, and complex water ways in it, aswell multiple story buildings, some with half their front missing,
allowing for multiple/complex sniping opportunities and strategies aswell as the chance to move from rooftop to rooftop,

and jump from building to building without having touching the ground once+ you could get about trough water ways/sewers

...........the possibilities of that theme are endless!

More too the point, Think Epic should lay of the HR Giger for themes because since alien,
everybody has ripped him off, species, pitchblack, matrix, doom, halflife, unreal 2 not to mention the whole list others,

How bout a map with wierd architecture/optical illusion like them wierd MC Escher pictures, or a map within a map contained in a crystal orb, making use of warp zones I suppose

or epic should rip off their own game and do that alive world Acheron from unreal 2, or the Drakk homeworld.........................................................

Of course. :)

It would work with any period in human history, I guess, and it's always fun to look into the funhouse mirror, so to speak.

IMO the trick with the theme, anyway, is to make it appear obviously alien from a short visual inspection, but make it equally obvious what part of Earth's history is being referenced. Kind of like Na Pali was both fairly alien and pretty strikingly medieval.

And agreed that Gieger has been done to death.

Behind the walls are bleachers and stands, with cheering fans

Hehe, I always thought that was missing as well. I guess the only thing stopping that is processing power...

there are so many movies and specially some decors/stages i d like to jump in. maybe some mappers could find some ideas to develop some maps later when the game is on the shelves:

-1) I have always liked this fantastic final scene with Clint eastwood and Gian Maria Volonte who is hanging over an open grave full of gold in a kind of huge military circular hill graveyard in THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY , if someone knows the movie they know what i mean. Please if anyone make a map of this scene, first make it good and keep the music THE ECTASY OF GOLD of Ennio Morricone
-2) You have this fabulous Dojo in RAN from akura Kurosawa that could provide a nice map thema too.
-3) I d like so much to fire some rockets in the kwik e Mart in SPRINGFIELD ;)
-4) the attack of Akkaba in LAWRENCE OF ARABIA could be a nice epic fragging place
-5) the prisonner camp in the GREAT ESCAPE
-6) all the places seen in DELICATESSEN from CAROT and JEUNET
-7) KILL BILL have many nice places too
-8) the bridge, jungle, camp and river of THE BRIDGE OF KWAI RIVER
-9) The Vella la Cava flight squadron 414 base of Greg Boyington in BAH BAH BLACKSHEEP
-10) the old south in the 30's like it is in O'BROTHER from Joel and Ethan Cohen
-11) Redrum redrum, the whole hotel and park of the SHINING movie from KUBRICK
-12) the village in the final duel in KELLY'S HEROES from Don SIEGEL
-13) the little italy from any of Martin Scorcese's movies:
-14) Alcatraz from ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ
-15) ...

Have computer displays/holograms modeling/reading out the DNA patterns, laser scanners reading out test subjects DNA , and overhead tubes carrying streams of amino acids, and bio goop.........................maybe it could even be an ancient alien craft found by liandri and so on and so forth!

That would probably be a really boring DM map to play on, but who cares?

The UT99 mod The Third Reich had a good musician on the team, and the music from one of the maps was a pretty obvious homage to Ennio Morricone. It was 110% badass... the map itself wasn't that great but I always loved playing it because of the tune. :)

Even the tournament itself can be a source of inspiration, like matches in holovision studios, camera's around the levels, posters and banners with the correct display name of the leading player.

And am I the only one who liked the idea of connected levels, like Stalwart and Stalwart-XL?

How about a map which is divided in two worlds. Kinda like ctf-catherine for UT.

But this time you don't have to fly through tubes to reach the other side.

This time you jump in.. for example.. a pool, swim down, and when you surface you're on the other side. But up there is the sky, and you'll have to get out of the water again get the idea...

It's as if the world, or you, turned around during your swim to the other side, but you weren't aware of it.

Maybe combat in a human body. Like that Q3 level, open sore. Was a good idea.

I've probably mentioned it already, but combat in a city like the one from "the empire strikes back", the one named "cloud city". Would be nice. There's this huge depth beneath you. But there's no immediate danger of you falling down. You just need to watch your step. A little.

A house level. BUT, there are many hidden (open, secluded) areas. For example, you can open the closet and there's this loooooooong corridor. Filled with say... blue-ish light, and cobwebs. And maybe some skeletons jammed in the walls. Some spooky sounds.

The bath tub is filled with water. It's so dark, you can't see what lies beneath. You grab a rebreather and jump in. ONCE you're down there, the water is "crystal clear". It's so pure, it almost blinds you. There are also well, f.e. crystals down there, and maybe maybe some sort of light sharks.. big fish no idea. Maybe keep them as props, extras.

The yard is a trap. Once you go outside, you see a small yard. The lawn is mowed. There are some bushes all around the garden.

BUT, once you step on the grass, you become quite small. STILL big enough to maintain a certain sense of orientation. It would kinda suck if you'd be so small the grass would be as big as trees. You could go wander around forever before you could find someone.

A space station, but for civilians. There are for example malls, there are living quarters tralala you get the idea. But it's been raided by space pirates. And almost destroyed, from within. It's been floating in space for some decades, and eh... Liandri found it and used it a special deathmatch level.

For those who want stealth combat. Or maybe, they plan on using certain areas for tourneys. Dark areas, no sounds, rubble everywhere.
Maybe for darkmatch games (mutator material).

Maybe a downhill speedmatch. You jump on a hoverbat, turbo sled, whatever and start racing downhill. Say f.e. it's centered around the sunspire.
But, the area's been covered in snow (imagine the scene from spirevillage. This was actually a HUGE level, and it included the spire).

There are obstacles in your path, like skaarj (or krall for that matter) jumping at you, nali you have to avoid. If you run over a nali, they explode redeemer style etc...

And you have to start all over again hehe.

What about combat in a T.v.

You're caught in tv world. One moment you're fighting it out in a western movie, the next you're running around on a football field, tennis court and before you know it you're in the news. Fighting around a battle field in some country...

Etc

a ctf map, set on a pair of 10,000 ft cliffs over an ocean. the cliff are set about 12 metres apart and the each base is set in a cave. Each of these rocky natural spires has a swiling spiraling path of tunnels and walkways going down and around it in a non symetrical way.At intervals on nearly every level of these structures are points where one can jump from one spire to the other, making the potential for differernt strategies and paths endless and can change in mid game.

The ocean beneath the spires would be roaring with three dimensional tidal waves crashing against the base of them, because i hate that thing where you get killed on DM Peak and other levels where you get kille when you fall into a static flat plane thats meant to be water, instead of being crushed by a furuiosly roaring animated ocean!

A dried up ocean bed that has sunken wrecks, ancient technology and the fossilised remains of gigantic creatures everywhere,

Makes me think of "pitch black"...

In addition of cultural thema, i would enjoy to have some maps with a weapon thema if i can describe it so.

For instance I would like to play on a map or arena where you could play with your rocket launcher only and where you could either shot directly at your opponent or over your opponent's head to make the boulders fall onto him.

Another example to explain my wish quite clearly:
A map or an arena designed for the flak. I think that some mirrors could be a nice way to use the ability of the flack to shot around corners and to see what is around a corner. After a while the mirrors that have been shot a lot by flacks could loose their reflective function or could just be destroyed... and why not having some mirrors to reflect the shock beams or the link shoots? that could just give some "billiard" oriented map if the arena is designed for link and shock only.
i think that the potential of mirrors can be interesting: hide behind a mirror and the only way to get hit (once the mirror destroyed) would be with a minigun, a rocket launcher, a sniping rifle... While goo would not affect it and all the laser/light inspired weapons would just be reflected with a danger to hurt the one who shot.

A good mix of various maps would be cool. Nice forest withs waterfalls (guess were 99% of the mapers would place the redeemer... *lol*), or icelands, underwater in gigantic glass, maps in space are also great. Real funny are the maps were the players are as small as toysoldirs and battle it out in the batch while hiding behind the yellow duck

A thing like the fortress of solitude in the superman movies, made out of crystals and ice,
but not like the ice tomb map in UT2k4,

it would be partially destructable, and falling crystal icycles could impale enemies

it would be cool if some beams or lightning shots could enter ice and exit it with a different angle just like in a prism. then ice could be destroyed by bullets and rockets but would not be affected by light /laser based weapons
