Yes, it seems that Lucas will finally release the true unmolested version of Star Wars Trilogy, yes, where HAN SHOOTS FIRST!

This is from one of the reviews of the DVD box set at amazon:

A note from a Lucas employee, May 4, 2005
Reviewer: John - See all my reviews

I am tired of all the outcries over this boxset, so I'm going to give you all a bit of insight to what went on behind the curtain.

First of all, let me explain why Lucas released this set. Demand was very high, and DVDs were going to be phased out in the near future. He wanted to please the fans, and give them something to tide over with until the BD/HD-DVD set hits stores in 2007.

Long story short, we had a lot to do and a very short period of time to do it in. Most of our resources were busy with Episode III (both the release and the DVD for the film). We were strained to begin with. Add putting the entire star wars trilogy on DVD with only a little bit over a year to restore and master it, and you have a race against time.

We would have liked to re-color the lightsabers, re-color Jabba, spend more time on the audio/picture, and everything else we wanted to do, but WE HAD NO TIME TO DO IT.

In addition, we only had time to work on one version of the film. We had to choose: the originals, or the special editions. Lucas chose the SE. Lucas didn't want to shell out the millions, and divert time and resources to them when they would be released in 2007.

Yes everyone, the originals are coming to BD/HD-DVD. Seeing all this moaning and groaning makes us wonder if anything will please you guys. The film team is curious if this High-Def set will fill you with joy, or make you all whine further. Why? Because we are already having to make alterations to the film. The restoration is screwing with some key elements, so we are having to go back and manually insert some things. For example, the lightsabers. Yes, they will look like the ones from Episodes I-III, because the High-Def conversion/restoration downgraded the appearence. We had to fix it, and couldn't give it that "70's look" so we were forced to make the sabers look like the more modern ones seen in the prequels.

I'm sorry for all the pain this DVD set has caused some of you. Had we had more time, things would have been different. Now we have a substantial amount of time to work with. With this additional production time, we can now include everything (such as deleted scenes) in the BD/HD-DVD set that we could not include here. You will have your original films (HAN SHOOTS FIRST) and a new directors cut (with more changes) in High Def very soon. Please be patient with us. We hope you can enjoy this set while we work to blow you away with our finished product in 2007. Thank You.

EDIT: It seems some people are paying no attention to my words, but thats ok...

Continue to make an outcry over the set if you want. It will convince Lucas further that the originals will sell (he feels everyone will prefer the DX over the originals). So go ahead and bash us if you want, but try to be somewhat respectful about it? Thanks again.

Of course, that is assuming that the above article is genuine. But assume that it is true, what do you think of it?

I'd bet my left nut that's not legit. There's no way someone from Lucas Arts who knows anything would be talking in that tone. It may be a guy who sweeps the floors and takes out the trash at the studios, but definately not someone with acess to tht kind of knowledge.

Ya know, for all that "Hans shoots first" crap, I'm pretty sure only a vocal select few are actually pissed about it. I mean, seriously. Who cares. Two guys shoots laser guns, one dies, other doesn't.

Similarily, the non-gift set DVD of E.T. was also slightly ruined due to whiners. Rather than having tons of extras, they cut that out so they could slap in the original, whose only appreciable change is nothing. If guns in a movie like ET makes or breaks the film, then count me out.

So umm... yeah. I don't see the big deal.

Other than the "Han Shoots First" scene and one added CG scene in EP4, I prefer the Special Edition over the originals. But I also know I'm in the minority in preferring SE. Nevertheless, if it makes everyone happy to release the original trilogy on DVD, so be it.

I don't know why it would upset anyone for him to release the origionals. It's not like they're going to take yours back if you own the SE. So, it should only cause happiness.

I have the originals on VHS, and my friend has them on laserdisc, so I don't care.

Actually the part where han shoots first didnt bother me much, but i'm really pissed that they replace darth vader's unmasked face with hayden's face in return of the jedi.

I am guessing this is fake, but they should leave the light sabers alone IMO. If they look like ****, then so be it. It's part of how the movie was.

There is a fan DVD going around the internet (can't link to where you might get it obviously) that has all the deleted from episode 4 put into it. There is a real funny cut scene at the start of the movie where storm troopers are tripping over each other. And there is a sex scene with Hon Solo and a alien prostitute. It is a pretty bad DVD, but it is fun to watch anyways if you are a big star wars fan.

So, that's a stormtroopers gang bang scene, and han's twin brother is having oral sex with an alien prostitute...

HANS SHOT FIRST? YOU MEAN MY WHOLE LIFE HAS BEEN SPENT IN WALLOWING MISERY OVER MISJUDGEMENT, MISINFORMATION, AND MISBELIEFS? lol, I had no idea. I know zilch about Star Wars. No idea that Hans even had a "shootout" with...whoever he was shooting at.

And what is it with ppl changing their avatars? Neonite, Sam the Man, and O.S.T.

i like the se 97 versions more, especially empire strikes back, because of how much more fleshed out cloud city is. i just would have preferred they released that without any changes. i didn't like 2 changes, those being boba fett's voice (not too big of deal) and anakin's ghost being replaced (makes no sense). also in se 97, i never liked the jabba thing in the first movie, but again, no big deal.

Sorry. But thats the first thing I think of when some one says Star Wars.
I think my brain was turned off when I watched it. I have only seen it once. :(

I agree with Sivilius though, apart from a couple of minor bits like the Han/Greedo scene, I prefer the Special Edition.

Yeah , When they revamped the movie i was so pissed off that they messed with the Han shoots first sceene! That was my main complaint about it. If they had left that sceene alone it would have been fine.

"for you daft non starwars fans" its the part in the first movie where Han and Guido are discussing his debt to jaba in the dive bar on Tatooine, Han shoots Guido and thats it, Guido doesnt even get a shot off. But when they redid the movie they added in guido shooting first and missing, and added new camera angles - totaly cheezy looking might i add!, and IMO it killed a sweet part in the movie.

I think Han should have shot guido in the head. A very loud, agonising but short scream. The brains should've been splattered all over the wall. And an eyeball slowly making it's way to the ground.

Han stepping on it, grinning. And making his way out of the bar, paying the bar tender.

And that's why you're posting on an Internet forum instead being George Lucas' personal advisor. :p

I only noticed the change when it was pointed out to me. Personally my favourite scene in the cantina was when obiwan lobbed off that dudes arm.

I'm not buying any Star Wars DVD until Lucasfilm releases a huge boxset with every single film on it.

Same here.

As far as the Solo/Greedo fight, my only complaint was that it looked like crap.

Did anyone else see the "Theatrical" versions of the trilogy a few weekends ago on Fox?

I don't know the details of all the changes made, but something I do know is that replacing the ghost of Darth Vader at the end of Episode VI with the actor who portrays Anakin in Episodes I and II is just about the dumbest thing ever.

True and also gay. I think George Lucas justified it by saying "jedi's retain their current age in ghost form while sith stay the age when they turned dark", which makes NO sense because Vader says at the end "you saved me luke".

I don't mind the special effects improvements, but I do think the changes that either altered the story or the nature of a character (Ie. Hans not shooting first) suck.

As far as the Solo/Greedo fight, my only complaint was that it looked like crap.Indeed. I wasn't aware that Han shot first until it was pointed out to me. However, I hadn't seen the scene yet, and when I did it was obvious how retarded the change was. It's just obvious that the shot is an afterthought, and it looks stupid.
In general though, I am in disfavour of changes as a matter of principle. If you want to make something different, make it new.

I hate the fact that they completely replaced the original musical numbers in Jedi. Lapti Nek ruled, and even if the original ewok music was corny, it was a more well constructed song, it was in an appropriate place to be corny, and it segwayed into the credits music way better.

Temuera Morrisson for Boba's voice in IV-VI and the whole ghostly Hayden Whinewalker thing was dumb. But apart from that the SE is nice. Just thank God he didnt put a Qui-Gon ghost there :P
