View Full Version : What's the best P2P software right now?

Kaaza Lite used to be ok, but now there's too many dud files and sometimes the files are just messed up and wouldn't play at all. I looked around and there seems to be so many of P2P software now, like bit torrent, e-donkey, ares, filetopia, and like 10 others. With so many to choose from, which one is the best in terms of large selection of files, no ad/spyware, fast connections, low resource hog, ease of use etc? Which ones do you use?

Only BitTorrent for me.
After I researched the insecurities and tracking capabilities in current P2P programs, I decided on only using BT.
But if I had to pick one, I would also choose LimeWire.

I've had some luck with a few file-sharing programs. Ares worked well for me for a while. It's got pretty quick download speeds and doesn't seem to hog much memory at all.
I'm using Morpheus at the moment, and it's a resource hog, big time. EVERYTHING else runs slow while this thing's going.
Slightly related: My Norton program gives me P2P woes beyond necessity. Ares worked for a while, until I got a new version. Then when the program loaded up, Norton would pop up every second telling me a remote computer was trying to access my system. Duh. I fiddled with everything I could think of and it wouldn't stop. That's why I switched to Morpheus, but it has just started doing the same thing. Don't know why it works for a while and stops.

Soulseek for me. Limewire sucks ass and is a resource-hog, in my opinion :p

Limeware seems to be getting a lot of votes.
Only BitTorrent for me.

Eh, i don't understand. First you said only bitTorrent for you, but then u chose limeware. Are they not both P2P? BitTorrent has several...clients, right? Which ones are the best?

Azureus is what I use. Once I figured out how to configure my house's network properly, I haven't had any problems.

You sorta misunderstood me Kray.
I only use BitTorrent now. But if I had to choose a centralized P2P program, I would use LimeWire, because I have used it in the past. But because of my security concerns, I switched from LW over to BitTorrent.
As for BT clients, I prefer the standard client for it's minimalism. Azureus is overcomplex for my needs. However BitTornado is rather nice, a good balance between standard BT and Azureus.

For new releases you can't get past BitTorrent. Of its various clients I prefer ABC. It has all the options I need without being bloated like some others
But due its architecture BitTorrent is unusable for older files or even single small files. I use eDonkey/eMule for that

Ha. I remember having to share about 20+ gigs of warez just to access most hubs.
edit - I don't really download music from P2P much anymore because my good speakers broke down on me and now I got these cheapos that sound horrible. I usually just download whole albums but I won't say from where. ;)
Anyway, Kazaa Lite K++ usually works good for me, and Soulseek(also mentioned a few posts above) has a lot of songs, especially harder to find stuff. The only problem I had was the queues and wait times for the download to start... It's good if you leave your computer on all day and/or overnight.

I like Azureus for BT. It uses hardly any resources- right now task manager says it is only using 1.8mb. Bit Torrent is great for new releases, Linux ISOs, patches, stuff like that. I usually buy all my music, but I also use Soulseek.

I might be wrong on this, but Azureus is a java app, which means there's a javaw.exe also running, so memory usage is more like 31 megs (I think, I've got 3 javaw's going and I can't tell which one).
Irregardless, Azureus is the best bittorrent client. Long live Java!

I am so outraged nobody mentioned Shareaza yet. It connects to Gnutella 1&2 networks, as well as eDonkey/Emule. I use that for my P2P.

I can get in a decent hub with five gigs.

I use BT now but before I entered the 20th century I used limewire and it's all good for the odd file that you need.

Limewire for me.
Excellent Mac compatibility, no spyware, you always get what it says your going to get, and it seems to have pretty much everything I need.

Huh. With Limewire, it would never start downloads on anything other than run-of-the-mill things, which I already have and don't need. Soulseek finds damn near everything, even obscure French bands that have one CD out with four tracks :p And it's also great for finding stuff by nonmainstream artists like Unik or Monos

I'm using Morpheus at the moment
what?! morpheus still exists?!
I used it 5years ago(and at that point it was dying, because the kazaa and users of another program were able to get the files of morpheus user, but the morpheus users were only able to get the files of other morpheus users)
edonkey for me, but I would delete it as soon as american TV stations start to stream their program online

Morpheus can now connect to about 6 different p2p systems aswell as BT.

I stopped using Morpheus way back when because it
A) Sucked
B) Was slow
C) Was full of spyware.

All 3 are true, but since there are alot of people using it I get good d/l speeds :D
Which is what I really care about.

Soulseek (http://www.slsknet.org/) says hi.
DC++
:stupid: Yeh DC++ for me too. Even though you have to be sharing a bit to get on the better hubs. But like Beeb said, there are good hubs that don't require a big share.

I use Shareaza. I am surprised more people don;t use it. It combines the most popular networks and handles them flawlessly. It is constantly being improved. :) Everyone who uses limewire and BT should give it a go.

Yeah I use Shareaza as a centralized P2P and BT client, works great for both. I used to use ABC for BT, it hogged all my bandwidth regardless of how I fiddled with settings. It would be using a total of 30KB/s for downloads on my 512KB downstream connection and Google would freaking time out trying to load.
