Finally released after months of delays and hundreds of improvments later. I think the demo ruined Forza quite a bit though, but Microsoft redeemed itself by delaying the game and god forbid doing something with all those delays.

For one the car list was raised from 150 upto 233 cars. No where close to as many as Gran Turismo 4's 700, but to be fair GT4 has dozens of worthless cars. Who honestly wants 60 skylines or a dozen different 1 horse power cars? So the car list in Forza is great. It has a balanced selection of your every day sport cars to your La Mans race cars, and even includes some prototypes like the 850 horse power Chrysler ME 4 12.

Gaining progress in the Career mode is as simple as winning money, as you win money you gain levels. There are 50 total. When you get levels you get sponsors and relationships with car dealers and car part makers and get discounts on upgrades. This also gets you access to more events, by level 30 you'll be doing endurance races.

I don't know that much about cars but i've articles where race car drivers tested Forza and said the game was pretty much life like. So that is good enough for me.

The AI however isn't life like. They are a down right pain in the ass and very hard to beat. But only because they are very aggressive and cheat. If you start somewhere in the middle of the pack of cars at the start of a race the AI will 75% of the time purposely ram into you and run you off the track or straight into the wall and you will be restarting the race.

The AI doesn't have to worry about damage either, but you do. Taking damage effects how your car handles and performs. I once accidently blew my engine in my Porshe 911 in a race and had to restart.

The tracks are also very long and it was clear they were meant for the race cars. Your everyday sport cars while still fast, take forever to do a lap. The races can seem to go on forever.

One thing I really like about Forza is that making the game harder will win you more credits. Its nice to be able to play a game at your skill level and get rewarded for it.

The car upgrades are also great too. Putting things in like a turbo charger will change the sound of the car. And unlike other racing sims, just because you have the most horse power doesnt mean you'll blow away the AI. Infact all it really means is that you'll come in 1st place most likely but the AI will be close on your ass the entire time.

I haven't had a chance to play with the online stuff, but I know Microsoft wanted me too. Online is going to be about the only place you can go to play with your super upgraded cars, as most of the career mode doesnt let you race modified cars. Only the point to point and amature events let you do this, after that you are forced to race unmodified making the game a hundred times more difficult.

The drivatar mode also ended up being just a cheap gimmick. It is where you can train a AI drive to play the game for you. But the problem is that it is nearly impossible to get it to where it can come in first place. If the drivatar doesnt come in first place then its worthless because it takes almost all of your reward money like a crappy prostitute would. Its only good for winning races you don't care to race yourself.

I don't think Forza is for everyone. The realism and difficulty of the AI will frustrate a lot of people. It is for real hardcore race sim fans and has a steep learning curve. Learning how to properly tune a car and know the ends and outs of the race track will be your only way to win in the later races.

After playing the career mode for 14+ hours, Forza is for sure a online racer. Microsoft really loves to pimp its Xbox live and make sure all of its games take advantage of the service. The career mode is fun, but the real meat of the game is online.

Forza isn't a great game, infact it is one of the best racing sims out there. But there are about a thousand different things that need to be improved. But for every complaint I have, I have about a dozen awsome things to say.

Pros: Graphics, sound, cars, huge career and arcade mode, lots of customization. JoO CaN EvN rIzE OuT uR CaRz Do0D!!!

Cons: Drivatar, cheap ass AI, tracks are way to big

Overal: 9/10

Sounds good... Can't wait, seems i don't want a PS2 just for GT4 :)

Do the cars handle more or less the same as in GT4, or are they completely different?

I think the cars handle very different from GT4. I really don't care about which game is better and haven't bothered to compare them. They are both real good.

On handling and tuning in general:

If you find your freshly purchased car to handle somewhat poorly, google about for tuning guides on the real car, and apply the settings and tips found there to the in-game model. It works perfectly. My '99 Impreza 2.5 RS is kicking ass now :D

I know gamespot gave Forza a better rating, and I've been loving it the last couple days.

GT4: 8.9
Gameplay: 8
Graphics: 10
Sound: 9
Value: 9
Tilt: 9 (don't know what that means, actually)

Forza: 9.2
Gameplay: 10
Graphics: 9
Sound: 8
Value: 9
Tilt: 9

I'm still waiting for a racing sim to draw from the good points of Motorcity Online, with massive options on how to customise your car, and tons of cars, even those that aren't great for racing. Because lets face it, who wouldn't love to try and take the same car they own out on the track in the game? I'm also not sure why the Mazda3 is in the game and not the Mazda6.

BTW: Don't even think about challenging my Eagle Talon

Before you get too confident about your Eagle Talon, try taking it online in S class. :D I was quite confident of my S2 class Civic Type R until I went online. It was a slaughter. My poor civic at the back of the pack filled with Ferrari's, Porsche's and a TVR. Needless to say the result was even worse. :D

Oh yeah, can GT4 do this?

Actually GT4 can do multiscreen. Doesn't multiscreen on Forza require more than one system, or am I mistaken?

No you just need double connection thingy or whatever it is the PS2 uses to do it. Or you can just get a wide screen HDTV.

GunnerX
26th May 2005, 08:09 AM
Forza does require a separate Xbox and game for the multiscreen support. There can be 5 screens in total. The main host, left view, right view, rear view and replay cameras. So GT4 can do this without the need of extra systems eh? How does it split the signal to multiple screens? This is not the same as Multiplayer splitscreen. It's single player multiple screens.

Tool, you can get 5 widescreen HDTVs and have a different view in each one. :D Here's someone playing using 3 plasma TVs like Sega's F355 challenge in the arcades.

You really need 5 xbox's? That just doesn't make much sense to me. Someone needs to make something with multiple video/audio inputs for one xbox, that would solve the problem.

JaFO
26th May 2005, 10:27 AM
It does make sense to me as the Xbox can't be powerful enough to generate and maintain 3+ separate views. Even pc's have serious framerate-issues in the few games that support multi-screen displays (MS Flightsim for example).

That just made me remember of a article on tomshardware.com whre they tried that on a geforce 5 series card and the geforce 5 blew up.

GT3 and GT4 had the same multiscreen feature that could be used for multiplayer or for different views, but I can't remember how many it would support. Each screen would require a separate PS2 though. I had actually mentioned the idea of multiple video outs for the next gen systems, and voila, PS3 did it, so we'll see what kind of functionality that will yield. I believe Anandtech's article has some pics of the display modes for PS3.

I can't compare Forza to GT4 because I don't have an Xbox, and I'm not about to get one just for this game.

I do have a PS2 and GT4, so....

Here's a a video that show a side by side comparison between the real Nurburgring and GT4's version of it...

http://www.villacorte.org/Nurburgring_Stuck_vs_GT4.mov (77mb) (the GT4 stuff starts about a minute into the movie)

Caution this video may cause you to buy a BMW M3, fly over to Germany, and get a day
pass on the Nurburgring (with it's 174 turns & 14+ miles of goodness),
or buy a PS2, a Logitech® Driving Force™ Pro (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2250,CONTENTID=7226) and GT4.

Now excuse me while I go fire up my PS2, Driving Force™ Pro and GT4...

Regardless of how awsome the Nurburgring is, I still want to get a BMW M3 because they are awsome cars. :D GT4 still rocks too, I play it more then I do Forza because I like its tracks a lot more. Forza's are all boring.

I sold a few cars last night to buy a ride for the American Muscle class, and I went with the Dodge Challenger.

Ho. Lee. Fook. This thing is awesome with just minor handling upgrades, but fully upgraded it just screams all over the place and slices through turns :D Equally awesome, I won the Stingray Corvette and a Mustang Boss 429, hot hot hot!

(PS: The Audi S4 kicks ass too.)

You can actually make your own custom logos from scratch? Like it has an MSPaint type thingy built into it?

Cap'n Beeb
31st May 2005, 03:58 PM
Not really, you have a bunch of basic shapes and such, but you can spin/move/resize/tilt them to do whatever the hell you want.

Although one can import new textures into the game somehow, all I know is you need a modded Xbox to do it.

Twisted Metal
31st May 2005, 04:09 PM
I don't understand why they wouldn't include an MSPaint type thingy, games as old as Cool Boarders 2 for PSX even featured it and you had total control over each pixel on your snowboard. It was a very simple paint program and allowed you to draw anything you want from scratch. I think all games should have this feature, it can't be hard to implement and the paint program wouldn't even take up a meg of space.

GunnerX

I think a paint program would take ages. You'll be surprised at how much you can actually do with 100 layers and the various shapes. Here's a site with great custom cars in Forza.

BB, on the first page at the very bottom left is the gradient object. This is your friend! This is what I did with the Toronto RX-7 and this Mustang GT.

That's precisely what I have in mind, and I've used that tool more than once. How'd you get the decals to not overlap though? I'm trying to get a nice transition from red to orange to yellow. Just spin/tilt the gradient?

Here's my current gem :)

Edit: Gah, it's got the ratings up. Power is 556HP and something like 490 ft/lbs of torque. Oh, and if someone can get Xbox Image Grabber working, and make a _helpful_ guide, I'll love you long time.

GunnerX

If you have a modded xbox some dashboards like UnleashX have a built in screen capture. To get a nice transition, you can take the gradient then stamp it (Y). Next is to flip the gradient tool by changing X or Y in size to it's negative counterpart. If the size of the gradient in X is 2.0, change it to -2.0 to flip it around and you will have nice transitions. Remember that you can cut and insert layers also.

Nice Challenger!

Heh, I've got a couple of dashboards on my box, and of course UnleashX isn't one of them :B I'll give that a go later on. Thanks for the the tips :)

And surprisingly, the Challenger did pretty good in the rear-wheel downhill race... even though I got a little happy in a few turns and nearly melted my tires :D
