UT2004? How About Q3A?

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.
I know I'm just spamming up the forum, but what the hell! :) Recently I happened to be visiting the "lvl" review site over on PlanetQuake and, as always when I happen by there, I checked out some of the recent featured maps on their front page. The screenshot for this one caught my eye, and being authored by Sock, whose Q3A mapping and texturing talents were no stranger to me, I took the time to download it and check it out. I know we're all about UT and its derivatives around here, but I found it interesting to see how far people can still push the old engine. It's now over five years old, just like UT, but author talent and great textures can still bring stunning visuals, and for the record, yes, it still runs like the clappers, even on my hoary old rig!

For those who can still lay a hand on their copy of Q3A, you could do far worse than to reinstall the game and check this level out. It's called "Pyramid of the Magician", and is currently still on the front page of lvl.

Looks great! Actually, I have Q3A still installed on both of my machines. I'll have to check that one out. What are some other good recently released (last year or two) Q3A maps? I can try those at the same time. I was just going to leave Q3A alone, but this kinda sparks my curiosity.

Well, seeing as how I'm responsible for sparking your curiosity...

Two recent additions to my collection:

Quake Monkeys
http://www.planetquake.com/lvl/download.asp?ftp=lvlworld&id=1742&zip=natedm3
(This author actually works for Raven Software, so it's pro quality)

Grindill 2.0
http://www.planetquake.com/lvl/download.asp?ftp=lvlworld&id=1691&zip=qxdm4_v2
(This is an improved(!) version of Grindill which won the 2003 Computer Game Conference Level Design Competition)

Just for fun, here is a "small" selection of my all-time favourite Q3A maps, just in case you missed any of them:

Chiroptera (quite possibly my all-time favourite, and a heavy inspiration for the design aesthetic of my Azwahtemh2 map for UT/UT2k4.
http://dl.fileplanet.com/dl/dl.asp?simland/chiropteradm.zip
(anything by Nunuk: http://www.planetquake.com/nunuk
or Sock: http://www.planetquake.com/simland/)

Tomb of Necrobiosis
http://www.fileplanet.com/dl/dl.asp?bighouse/klzegypt.zip

Coriolis Storm
http://dl.fileplanet.com/dl/dl.asp?bighouse/lun3dm1.zip (anything by Lunaran: http://www.lunaran.com/news.php)

Iron Yard
http://dl.fileplanet.com/dl/dl.asp?bighouse/fr3dm1.zip

Grindmill
http://dl.fileplanet.com/dl/dl.asp?bighouse/alkdm06.zip

Disinformation
http://www.planetquake.com/dl/dl.asp?bighouse/bal3dm3.zip (anything by Bal)

Liquid Carbon
http://dl.fileplanet.com/dl/dl.asp?bighouse/map-charon3dm11v2.zip (anything by Charon: http://www.interactivedeath.net/)

Meatball Grinder
http://www.planetquake.com/dl/dl.asp?bighouse/ik3dm2.zip

Lucid Dream
http://dl.fileplanet.com/dl/dl.asp?bighouse/yog_4.zip (anything by Yogi: http://freshteam.telefragged.com/team/yogi/)

Bullet in the Gun
http://dl.fileplanet.com/dl/dl.asp?bighouse/yog_9.zip

Bitter Embrace
http://www.planetquake.com/dl/dl.asp?bighouse/mrcq3t6.zip (anything by Mr.Clean: http://www.planetquake.com/mrclean/)

Fistful of Steel
http://www.planetquake.com/lvl/download.asp?ftp=lvlworld&id=1250&zip=mksteel

I'm checking out several more very recent releases so I'll let you know shortly, but from screenshots and/or the author(s), they *should* be rather good!

I have most of those old ones, but a few I don't. I'll be back in Tampa at my computer around Dec. 29th and I'll try them and the three new ones then. Thanks!

heem , q3a , nha .... you must be kiding

the engine can't go this far , the engine suport simple brush , it all looks like hourences's @ 3d Studiomax work

No probs. However, I did neglect to mention that, most unfortunately, the level I posted screenshots of has no bot support. Apparently the author tried numerous times, but the layout proved too difficult to path. The author is no slouch in this area, so it wasn't a case of slacking off. I thought you should know in case it alters your desire to download it.

Actually, in Q3A if authors don't include a bot file (*.aas) then you just can't have bots (this is normally included in a folder in the pk3 file). You can select some to play, but they never spawn. Still, it does allow you to take your time and wander around and admire the handiwork! :D

Ooops, just installed Doom3 last night and catching up on UT/UT2004 maps. I do fully intend to try those Q3 maps this month though. I'll be back in this thread when I do. See Ya! :D

.......started DLing some last night, I hope I can find most from non-FP links. I got errors last night and my computer at work keeps asking for a Gamespy ID. By the way, is that Grindmill 2.0 or Grindill 2.0? I'll check out some of those author web sites as well.

Here's an interesting link to Chartres by QkennyQ:
http://www.quake3bits.com/htm/maps/chartres.htm

Supposedly, this one will test your system to its limits! :D

.......well, I finished downloading all that I wanted after checking out those links as well as the authors' web sites. I couldn't find a non-fileplanet link to Monolith (monolith.zip by Sock) and Morcalavin's Sanctuary (crystal.zip by Sock). I e-mailed the author as well as lvl about it though. We'll see what happens. See Ya!

Well, I just tried out about 14 Q3 maps from those links and they were fun. It seems Batcula and Badland's Palace only start from the ~(tilde). I did start Chartres (cool!) from there and it is worth it for that one, but forget the other two. I've pretty much given up on the ones that the mappers can't get to appear in the menu anyway. I'm still waiting to here from the author (Sock) about Monolith and Morcalavin's Sanctuary though. Here's the other 13 that I tried with brief comments (if something's not listed, I most likely already had it and tried it a while ago):

- Pyramid of Magic-bots?
- Quake Monkeys-small and reminds me of older Quake games
- Grindill 2.0-quake2 anyone?
- Liquid Carbon-dark gray and green
- The Big Chill-beware the cold caves underground
- Distonic-could take a few more games to figure out those jumps, hehe
- Kleskonian Curves-longest yard on speed?!
- Tomb of Necrobiosis-klesk is an S.O.B.#@##@#$%#$%^
- Pull Your Socks Up-bots aren't bad at all
- Powahaus Redux-z-axis with easy spot to frag bots, good TeamDM also
- The Crucified Colony-similar to another map I have but not sure which one
- Inextremis-good 1on1 map
- Lucid Dream-zip file needs renaming or something

Anyone, please let me know about DLing those other two maps from a non-FilePlanet source. See Ya!

"I'm still waiting to here from the author (Sock) about Monolith and Morcalavin's Sanctuary though."

Anyone know what's up with these two maps? Anyone have the zips you can send me? No word from the author and no word from someone I asked online about them in a forum either.

LvL is such a wonderful sight. its so nice to see people making maps on that old engine., but its really hard to find the real name of levels when evewryone is using*.pk3 double talk.
Q4 is coming out, but looks like mostly a single player mode wonder like Doom3, with little or no support for multiplayer or custom maps

Seriously though, how can I get these two maps as the last two additions to my Q3 map collection? :)

...or, uh, how do we get Thunderstrike back here to spam up the forums.?;)

I'm having trouble using FTP for Insite. Once I get myself sorted I'll upload the files. The irony is that I didn't know where my copy of monolith was, so I took just ten minutes to download it from fileplanet with no waiting. You sure must hate fileplanet, Skaarj, to rather wait several months to get a map than a few minutes or even an hour or so. ;)

OK, let me know where I can get those two files? Temporary link from somewhere or ...... I do have an old FTP program on my old computer I can use also. I made the decision a while ago to stay away from FilePlanet and I'm sticking to it.
