Running UT under Win2000

I thinking about buying Windows 2000, because I have got Windows 98 and it sucks! It crashes all the time and pisses me off when I a beating the hell out of someone the all of a sudden the game crashes and I have to reboot! /~unreal/ubb/html/frown.gif

I heard that games don't run as well under Windows 2000 as they do on Win98! Is this true?

No matter how much he ticked us off, Win98 pisses me off even more!!! I have to agree with Gorry about Win98. My computer crashes randomly and there's no way I can pinpoint where the problem is. I'm also thinking of switching to Win2000.

Hey Rooster, you're running Win 2000 right? What's your opinion on it?

BTW, I'm not really backing up Gorry, I'm just trying to get help. /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

Windows 2000 is the best WinOS out there.

Windows 2000 is the worst WinOS out there.

You'll hear both opinions from current, or sometimes even former, users of Microsoft's latest operating system.

Some things to remember. Windows 2000 itself is vastly more stable than the Win9x series. However, Win2000 has been out for a short time, so device drivers (such as the all important video card) haven't had much time to mature. Most complaints as to Win2000 can be traced back to the current state of available drivers, a situation that will improve after a little bit of time.

Windows 2000 is Windows NT 5.0, and therefore designed for use in non-home-use roles. What this means is that Win2000 has greater security measures, more control, extra features. If you are willing to put a small amount of time into learning the subtleties of the OS, you will find more flexibiliy and power than Win9x. However, all these included features come at a higher hardware resource cost (ie memory and cpu) as well as the extra time spent administrating your system.

Windows 2000 does included DirectX 7.0, plug and play, and most other Multimedia goodness that you can find in Windows98, Second Edition. I play Unreal Tournament under Windows 2000 with no problems (but then I also have set up UT for Linux, as well).

If you are interested in putting slightly more effort into your OS, Windows 2000 offers much more for you than the 9x series.

If, however, you just use your system to play games, surf the web and write emails to grandma, you might want to wait for Windows Millenium Edition. WinMe (yeah, I hate the name too) is the next in the 9x line, and should offer more stability than 9x. The operative word being should, in that this is still based on the same 9x kernel.

If you have any questions, though, http://www.ntcompatible.com is a great place to get Win2000 tips and news.

I used to have Win NT4.0 at home that I used to play Starcraft. All of our PCs at work are NT4.0. I know that win2000 is NT5.0 and I don't have any problems dealing with NT5.0. I have dealt with NT4.0 with endless hours of debugging (read: constant rebooting).

I have read various stuff about Win 2000. Just would like to know from a person that has it and plays UT religiously (read: Rooster).

Thanks for the info btw. /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

Now that doesn't make much sense. Why wait for Me if you're going to get W2K?

So far, I'm MUCH happier with W2K than I was with Win9x. Me is just another version of Win9x. No thanks.

Mellinium really has very little to nothing to do with W2K. So why wait?

Bad thing is that my soundcard isn't supported with Win2K (onboard f*ck ensoniq PCI), but i'm patient, and keep waiting, and waiting, and waiting, until creative makes one (yes ensonic is now from creative /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif )
Or until i buy a new 133Mhz mainboard (i'll think that will happen sooner)

i tried rooster, i really tried, i have the MSDN versions of my work, and tried serveral releases of Win2K, (i'm an Unix Server specialist, not windows btw) several drives of creative, but all in vain, Win2K just keeps silent. Also the updates of creative for Win98 doesn't work either for the ensoniq.
That's also why RW doesn't work on my PC too with UT or any other game /~unreal/ubb/html/frown.gif, well i learned to live with it, an don't want to spend to much time in it, course i wanted to update my PC allready to an 133MHZ Dual board, with nothing onboard, with an SB 128 Live
