Hello, yep I'm the new guy. Glad to say this is one of the best mods around =) Anywho, I unfortunitly got some bad information (great, first post on the forum and it's to report a bug :( )

The Bug(s):

Bug 1: Unable to view HUD / Put in spectator mode

When playing the game online, It will sometimes not load the HUD, as in it's not visable. This includes all features and names over player cars. This isn't much of a deal in racing, but on other game types, it makes the gametype almost unplayable.

Also, sometimes when getting on a server, I will be thrown into something I will call "Half spectator" mode. In which I select join for the server, but the game "interphase" thinks I'm a spectator. I can still select a car and race, however I have the "spectator" like mode on. So when I click, no horn, as it thinks I'm trying to "click to view a new player". Also, no text messages will display. Below is an image of me playing the game, but the game thinks I'm in spectator mode.

I am the car closest to you, as you can see, the game thinks I'm spectating, but I am actually driving that car and interacting with those players.

I notice that both these problems seem to resolve if my ping is low and once fixed, it will only mess up again when a new track is loaded (even if my ping goes back over 250+) (so each time I load a track, there is a potential that the error occurs again.)

If I get the server message at track loadup (like the official servers) before it displays my select car dialog, then I'm ok. Otherwise, I get one of the above problems. I notice that if my ping is over 250, it happens almost 100% of the time.

Bug 2: Ball in K-Ball doesn't show (only online)

This is I beleive similar to the above bug, as if the game is forgetting to update the "gfx" position of the ball after someone scores. Usually when a level first loads and I don't get the above bug issue, it will display fine until someone scores. In which case, it is a 50% chance that I can't see it anymore until someone scores again. Sounds like an unpdate issue with me and the server, as if I'm not getting the message that the ball was returned.

In the above images I showed earlier, the ball "should" be where the cars all together (in billards, I beleive it's supposed to be displaying where all there players are driving to) but it doesn't show as you can see.

Note that this bug "appears" to be independent of the other bug, meaning that if my HUD isn't working or I'm in "half speculator" mode, I can still see the ball, and sometimes when I don't have bug 1, I have bug 2. Sometimes, I have both bugs, which makes playing K-Ball virtually impossible.

Bug 3: "Esc" Menu invisible...

This only happens when I get bug 1. sometimes (not always) I can't see my "esc" menu. I can here it come up, and I can interact with it, but it is invisible to the view (so much now that I actually memorized were all the buttons are on that menu)

These bugs only happen online, and so I beleive it must be something to do with client / server information being lost. I'm not sure why that would effect the HUD, but I can see that for being a reason for it throwing me in spec mode or losing the ball image.

I tried all avialable servers and it has happened on all of them. It has happened less on the offical ones, but still present.

Is there anyway this could possibly cleared up for the next release? I'm on dial (yep, I spent the 15 some ours downloading this thing) so when the server has more than 3-4 people I usually get some 250+ pings which cause these issues.

Also, if you do update, please make it an update file rather then having to download the entire package again, I can't be blocking my phoneline all the time now. =)

These bugs all seem to be something to do with your high ping. Do you get an average of 250 ping all the time? What connection do you use? What gfx settings do you use?

I'm a 56K dial connection, maybe one of the only considering the size of the mod. The Ping is average for a 3-4 car game. Any more than that, and I start hitting occational peaks of 300. my range so far has been 64 to 318.

As for my gfx settings, I use high and normal, with all the special "nice effects" on (like the trilinear filtering). Would this effect my ping? As far as I know, all information sent over the net has really no gfx data (accept when people join and it needs to tell me what gfx to load up, like there player model)

Extra GFx settings won't affect your ping, but it will give you additional lag that you perhaps have not noticed before in Instant Action.

It could be the lag so I'd recommend lowering your settings and trying to join after that

Hmm, rather odd.

All I can ask at the moment is what UT2004 patch version are you using?

Whenever I play I have a 300+ ping and some packet loss due to my geographic location, but I've never had a missing HUD before. When I was on 56k though, the Esc menu would occasionally vanish in UT2004 Onslaught (along with vehicle turrets etc.), so it's possible you are suffering from the same problem I (and many others) used to have in ONS, which leads me to beleive this could be a UT2004 problem and not UnWheel.

the latest version of UT2004 is what I currently have 2370 or something like that (can't remember off hand). It could be a UT2004 bug possibly, but so far, only UnWheel has had the issue, and I've had some major lag on some normal games before so I don't fully think it's totally just UT's fault.

From what I'm understanding, I always load up in "spectator mode" when using UnWheel, not sure if this is by UnWheel design or me getting messed up somewhere. Once I get the "server message" then it sets me as if I normally joined, adds the hud, then I can select my car. It's when I don't get the server message before the car selection is when I get issues.

I will try lowering settings and see if that helps.

You should try the newest patch as well, just came out a day or 2 ago, its 3233, http://download.beyondunreal.com/fileworks.php/official/ut2004/ut2004-winpatch3323.exe

hmm, still getting the same glitches...

I've updated to the latest patch reported in this post and followed all other mentioned advice (like lowering gfx detail) but I still get issues.

However, so far the only one that has occured (since I changed my setup) was the no HUD one. All others have either been untested yet (like K-Ball) or just haven't had issues with. But also, I've only played on the official server with few people on.

Just letting you know that I still experince on of the few mentioned bugs here.
