Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum and would like to gather around the Linux users of Unreal Tournament 2004. I just wanna' say that I've played Unreal Tournament 2004 on both Windows and Linux. My conclusion is: UT 2K4 is a hell of a lot better on Linux. OMG I can't believe how much smoother this game runs. OpenGL all the way. I have everything cranked Ultra High on 1280x1024 resolution with every detail imaginable and I don't get any lags. I love it. I'm so glad that Unreal Tournament 2K4 came with a linux installer. I only use Windows for the games. Linux doesn't have too many high-end games like Windows does. You can run some windows games through windows emulation on Linux but for the most part it doesn't work very well.

Another thing I'd like to say is for all you Windows users, GO LINUX!!! It's so much faster because of it's low use of system resources hence, reulting in smoother gameplay. Oh yeah and I'd also like to say that I'm very impressed with Doom3 coming with a Linux installer as well. I believe after I play that, there will be no more Unreal Tournament 2004 for me. Half-Life 2 I'm not sure if that's gonna' go for Linux as well but I sure hope it will.

One last thing, for all you gamers out there that are in love with Unreal Tournament 2004 (not a great o' game as I thought it would be, but still amazing), try Painkiller. That game is probably the best FPS game I've played on PC to date. The game has amazing graphics and unreal physics. I'm sure you'll fall in love with it once you play it. It kinda' reminds me of a first person "Devil May Cry" but much better. I think this game was overlooked by many because I never even heard of it until I somehow came across some screenshots and a trailer and said I'm installing this!

Maybe I should finally bite the bullet and try out linux... Is it hard to learn if you're used to windows? I heard they are pretty similar, except Linux being a ****load better.

A lot of people are turned off by Painkiller's "Box you in a small area and throw endless waves of crap at you" gameplay.

I for one enjoy it as I'm also a big Serious Sam fan. There's not enough "old skool" style fps games today, but I guess people like the online "tourney" style games better these days...

Yes and No. Well I'll have to go with no. Linux is sorta' hard to learn but it's definitely worth it. Your best bet is to download a Linux distro and create a partition to install it on. That way you can use both so when you get frustrated with Linux, switch back to the old Windows. But once you learn Linux, you'll probably like it much better than Windows. I sure do. You have more control over what's goin' on with your system. Everything is open source so you can configure everything with text files. It's great. The KDE and Gnome window managers are similar to Windows' Eplorer.exe shell. Give it a try, it'll only make you stronger.

And Painkiller is also online. And you're not boxed in. I don't know what buddy was talkin' about. I like better than UT2K4. But that's just my opinion.

I'm so tempted to put linux on my PC's partition.

I've got an AMD64, and my understanfding is tha you can get 64 bit linux and 64 bit UT2004.

If I wanted a linux installation just for ut 2004 64 bit, which linux should I choose?

And how easy is dual booting.

Good.

So which flavour of unix is best for UT2004 64 bit. And is there an idiot's guide on how to install it anywhere.

Almost all major distrobutions have 64 Bit support, and they are identical.(processor support is built into the kernel. If you dont know what this means, dont worry.)

Again, the only hard part about installing Linux nowadays is partitoning, if you want Windows & Linux side-by-side. There are guides all over the place about this. If you just want Linux (Highly reccomend, forces you to learn) you are all set.

With what distro to use, I am obviously biased. I have heard Gentoo(Probably the only hard-to-install major distro left) is very good for gaming. I personally use Debian, and it works great. I get 25-30% better framerate than on Windows.

If you have any questions PM me.

I think what he meant is: U get a closed "arena" everytime. U start of, kill the monsters/zombies and u proceed to the next part. Once u enter it, a door/wall closes the way u came in. In other words u are "boxed in" in the new arena.

Also there is really no point in comparing Painkiller to UT. UT has loads of depth, tactics wise, Painkiller is just shooting as much as u can to defeat the hordes of enemies.

Assuming you've got a "normal" PC, you should get the i386 version. :)

It's an AMD 64, so I want to try the 64 bit version for the AMD 64.

I'm downloading SUSE for AMD 64 - we'll see how it goes.

I play 2k4 on Nix pretty often, usually when i'm having a break from all the python i'm learning. Although the fps while using OpenGl isn't what it should be (GF4ti4600 (maybe some driver problems??)), it makes for a good bit o' fun.

Also i'd recommend Debian to you, by far and away one of the best distros of Linux imo ;)

ok so i go to dl the .iso files for debian, but i cant figure out what .iso images i need to dl in i386

how many .iso's are there to install debian?
one folder has such files:

debian i386 .iso
debian i386 NONUS .iso (not exact filenames, but that was the major difference between the 2)

do i need both?/ and is that all the .iso's i need?
