it seems to me that when the metallica and napster thing happened, is when p2p started picking up
4 or 5 years ago when i first got cable i was able to download full length high quality movies, and all kinds of music with no problems at all
i dont think its new technology thats making p2p grow
its all the media spreading the word about p2p
i dont think mainstream media even knows about irc yet
maybe cause more of the irc users are more advanced computer users and they keep their mouths shut about it?
