Windows 2k and NT source code leaked?

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

According to an article on Slashdot, the source code for Windows NT and Windows 2000 has been leaked and can be found online.

The story originally came from Neowin, a news site that focuses largely on Windows news. Apparently (the server is, of course, down, so I couldn't check it out myself), it's a somewhat disreputable news source, so I maintain a healthy skepticism about this whole thing.

Still...it makes one think...

It's not a hoax. It was confirmed by MS officials last night.

It's only a partial leak, but it could be a potential security nightmare for them. Easy grepping for buffer overflows.

Are you sure it's not an hoax?? Many of the files on that list sound more linux-esque than windows-esque:
Code:
    61072 07-26-00 02:12 win2k/private/inet/mshtml/build/scripts/tools/alpha/awk.exe
   112672 07-26-00 02:12 win2k/private/inet/mshtml/build/scripts/tools/alpha/chmod.exe
   143280 07-26-00 02:12 win2k/private/inet/mshtml/build/scripts/tools/alpha/grep.exe
    58640 07-26-00 02:12 win2k/private/inet/mshtml/build/scripts/tools/alpha/kill.exe
    88884 07-26-00 02:12 win2k/private/inet/mshtml/build/scripts/tools/alpha/touch.exe
    10328 07-26-00 01:41 win2k/private/genx/shell/gnumakefile
        0 11-18-01 14:24 win2k/private/inet/urlmon/compress/gzip/
just to name a few.
I know NT was supposed to be POSIX, but it's a bit weird :hmm:

Well, it looks like it wasn't the full source code, only around 15% of it. Maybe this'll encourage microsoft to fill in any holes that they know about in those bits of code, asap. :)
