i heard that's how you do speed reading, which is not to focus on what each word is, but basically look at the entire line at once, not focusing on word/meaning, but the form of hte whole sentence, and seeing it as a graphic instead of text. if you do that well, you can graduate to looking at an entire page at a time, just seeing the form of the whole thing and understanding what it's saying. you'll be able to do what my friend did, which is to read the last harry potter book in a span of 2 days, which included eating, sleeping and hanging out with the rest of us. when i read i do something similar where i don't focus on the words but sort of gleam and trying to comprehend instead of read. it's actually very tedious, your eyes and brain get tired out quickly, but you definately retain a lot of the stuff.

That's probably true but there can be nasty side effects. For instance, whatever you do, DO NOT under any circumstances try "speed reading" the Bible. I did that once and ended up in the 15th century. Do you know how many souls I had to harvest in order to get back? Luckily, there was an inquisition going on at the time so it only took about a week or so. Still...the hygiene...fwaa... :Poop: never again.

growing up I had a hard time getting past reading each word on it`s own and couldn`t get the whole sentance. I`d have to reread stuff over and over to comprehend it. Took forever. :con:
I`m so glad I`m over that.

Dipthongs screw that up, and it only works when you've really internalized the words in question. For example, most native speakers who read probably didn't have much trouble with your post, but I'll bet people who read english as a second language had a hard time if they could read it at all (though it would probably work for them in their native language).

This is what lead certain ideologically-challenged individuals whose life's mission is to screw up education to try instituting "whole word" learning. Imagine their utter amazement at discovering the fact that it only works if you can already read prevented the sceme from really going anywhere. I can only imagine they compensate cognitive disonnance so drastically that being wrong is new every time. They sure don't get tired of it.

Sad thing is, I didn't really notice the words were all back-assward until I finished reading the first sentance.
