View Full Version : Homeworld 2

Hehe. After I took over the first enemy assualt assualt frigate I thought "man, its good to be back!"

Good good game so far, I'm only on mission 3, but my impressions are all positive.

The 4 biggest changes:

1)fighters are semi useful in the long run! when you build a fighter or corvette, you get an entire squadron...as long as one of them can make it back to a hanger to dock, when it leaves, the entire squadron will be there again at no cost...also they can target subsystems of ships now, meaning a quick strike at a important ship part is pretty useful

2)new interface...there is something of a blizzard type interface now, its not as intrusive as you'd think. If you played the first homeworld or the expansion, you wont even need the tutorial

3)much much harder...I actually lost on mission THREE. I went through cataclysm on very hard without building anything but workers too, so this increase in difficulty was a surprise. I seem to have a constant lack of money. Various reasons, but a big part of this is attributed to....

4) Cant stay on a mission forever anymore. After the last goal is done, you auto harvest all resources and hyperspace. This was a dissapointment actually because you can no longer rebuild a fleet at the end of the mission, and research everything availible. I'm finding that salvage is a huge part of the game, because you're often cash strapped AND have a lack of ships.

I'm only on mission 4 and it's fucking hard. Not that the enemy kick your ass or even damage your mothership. But every attack, every forward ressource collector get blown by either dozens of fighters or continuous frigate assault :hmm:
An useful feature is the PAUSE mode, since you can still give orders and build ships. When you're attacked on several sides, it's nice to switch from one to the other while pause ;)

good game but not really original. there is muuucchh more units than in the demo (without hacking it that is), the new units are even introduced as soon as in the 3rd mission.

24th Sep 2003, 04:55 PM
er whats the pause key lol

yeah its not so much mothership blowing up, its more like a long long war of attrition on both sides, and you cant really make your ultimate victory fleet because there's no break in the enemy waves

24th Sep 2003, 08:09 PM
the pause key is the pause key, its right above your page up key.

24th Sep 2003, 08:21 PM
oh THAT pause key

I pressed P, a la homeworld and cataclysm and nothing happened so I thought they took it out because it made the game too easy.

From what i read from the dev team , the difficulty in a missions is set by making an addition for all the ship you begin with , at this mission start (addition of the sum of their RU value, as lot of fighters is not the same as lot of frigates)

The more ships you have at the mission start (i heard that even your actual RU ressource in bank count too) , the more difficult it will be by making the CPU to have a lot more ships and squadrons to throw at you .

So if you find some mission too hard, you are in fact responsible by having a too powerfull fleet yourself ;)

Some very special ships doesnt count in this addition number (but no more spoiler from me)
Have fun

im on mission 7. but yeah the levels are quite hard...I think i've lost once on every level since 4 or 5

25th Sep 2003, 04:32 AM
Grrrrrrrrrr. It's not out here yet.

Boron']im on mission 7. but yeah the levels are quite hard...I think i've lost once on every level since 4 or 5I'm on mission seven as well. Pretty good game, but it seems like you can't really win some of the missions the first time, try and fail seems to be the only way to succeed.

Liked the athmosphere of the other HW games better.

this one is more of a fair slug it out war thing i think

the other two were more of a ragtag army vs evil empire setting

Could you post some screenies of the full game?
And whitch video cards are you using?

25th Sep 2003, 12:46 PM
nothing exeptional here, just a few cheap units
taken on a GF4 (in 1280x960 then resized) Keiichi has posted some nice screen shot in that other thread :)

eh some pics...ati radeon 9700 pro, resolution in game 1600x1200

25th Sep 2003, 05:59 PM
ok any suggestions for the 4th mission?

I'm just jacking their frigates as they come to me at the start and building up a fleet that way. The first time around, I built up corvettes but they got plastered. Then I built up torpedo/flak frigates, but both of them seem to suck ass against everything.

The only decent frigates that are availble seem to be the enemy ones so....hence my strategy 3rd time around.

refresh me on what the 4th mission was

26th Sep 2003, 01:49 AM
I think I used a screen of Ion cannons from a distance, while the bombers and Inteceptors were distracting them. Wasn't very hard.

the one where you're supposed to blow up the hyperspace inhibitors on the asteroids and then the base

the problem was the 20 frigates appearing out of no where

anywhos I beat it with pulsar corvettes and bombers...dem pulsars are the pwn

I learned from the boards that there was a 'dynamic difficulty going on'. It takes your total armor value, and give the enemy cash flow and ships accordingly. Unfortunately its a bit off, because for every one destroyer you have, they get like 3. I read that one guy had a big fleet and on mission 12 he was immediately rushed by 28 destroyers and killed, and then he went back to the previous mission and scuttled everything but fighters and 2 battlecruisers, and he was only rushed by 2 destroyers.

The first time I did mission 4 I had an entire fleet of jacked ships from mission 3, and that was making it really hard. Afterwards I just used full pulsar corvettes and bombers. Frigates suck anyway. Not fast enough to dodge any fire, not tough enough to take any fire...worst of both worlds. I retired the mission 3 carrier too, to lower my armor count. Those things are useless considering the armor and money they cost.

Is there some trick to jacking ships? my marine frigates allways get decimated at the outbreak of a battle, and even if they don't the frigate they dock with can always kill it before the bar fills up

26th Sep 2003, 05:24 PM
use gunship corvets or fighters to escort the frigate. also make sure they don't attack your target ;)

26th Sep 2003, 06:44 PM
A support force is a good idea and you can do the following too

Make a lot of Collector with the Repair ability researched to follow your Marine Frigate salvage attempt .
There are 2 usage with those.
-They repair the Marine Frigates during the process
-They provide additional targets to distract from your Marine Frigates ;)

26th Sep 2003, 09:51 PM
they'll always go for marine frigates first

the ship being captured will be disabled, and wont be able to hit the frigate, but every other ship in the vicinity will pretty much concentrate fire and blow it up

the best times for marine frigates are at the end of battles....try kill all the fighters and other units first, then when its just your target go send a couple marine frigates

26th Sep 2003, 11:56 PM
the ship being captured will be disabled, and wont be able to hit the frigate, but every other ship in the vicinity will pretty much concentrate fire and blow it up

this is not happening for me, the frigate is doing this ultra slomo spin to get lined up with the heavy missle frigate and getting pounded to around half life then when it docks it keeps launching missles at it

27th Sep 2003, 12:08 AM
er you may need to make some progress in boarding

there is a point about halfway through where the guy says 'we have the bridge' or something, and I think thats when it stops firing

I dont know what to say really...just dont lead with your frigates, dont bother moving them into a big fight where you dont have lots of numbers advantage, and try having 4 frigates...one of them probalby will make it!

27th Sep 2003, 01:55 PM
try using scouts. I haven't tried it myslef on frigates but those emp blasts can be quite helpful

27th Sep 2003, 01:58 PM
Move those frigates in AFTER you've at least established a fighter/frigate superiority. If there's ion/heavy missile frigates or nasty corvettes running about those marine/infiltrator frigs don't stand a chance.
Nothing better than capturing some poor bastard's mothership or battlecruiser as he helplessly watches. I think there's a point where he isn't even allowed to scuttle the ship to prevent you from getting it. ;)

Not too impressed with the singleplayer of HW2, but the skirmish/multiplayer owns with a ****in' capital P.

Nice, I got a FX5200. shoud be good.

Hmm, I'm on level 13 now, and it is hard.

I have the time limit (until the enemy forces destroy the power generators of the gate).

I start the mission attack immediately, but by the time I blasted the 8 (!) enemy battlecruisers to dust I don't have enough time to build up my forces sufficiently in order to be able to destroy the forces attacking the gates :/

I'll have to try if it helps if I scuttle/retire some of my ships (maybe the space dock thing). I could probably do without the destroyers too (the ion frigates do lots of damage) but they are pretty useful.

At least there aren't any money problems. The dynamic difficulty works in many ways - the enemy has more forces, which means I get more money (from destroyed Destroyers and Battlecruisers). In Mission 12 I got probably around 60k just from destroyed ships.

Great game, though I haven't tried the multiplayer so far.

Can't really appreciate the graphics since I'm playing mostly using the sensor manager :/

It is really impressing though to see 1 Dreadnaught, 2 Battlecruisers, 5 Destroyers and 20 Ion Frigates hitting one enemy Battlecruiser to bits in a couple of seconds :)

I've got a small HW2 screenshot gallery set up on my MSN account. You can view it HERE (http://groups.msn.com/KeiichisStorage/homeworld2.msnw).

WARNING: Spoilers aplenty!!!

Did any of you people had major difficulties with 'Satans backyard' (Lvl 12)?
It took 6 attempts, brute force and a golden tip from someone (Max out BC's, Destroyers and Ion Frigates!) to overcome those insane amounts of enemy BC's.

(The 'smart' AI simply looks at your starting fleet and multplies his own by a factor xx.) :(

Lvl 13 is a tough one as well but i think it can be done by destroying the engines on those hordes of BC's while distracting them with Resource Collectors.

5th Oct 2003, 11:37 AM
It was easier than I thought.

I simply sent all my fighters, corvettes and movers to destroy one group of units attacking one of the power plants.

My cap ships and frigates had no problem destroying all the battlecruisers (though I did lose most/all of them).

I wish you would be able to build up your fleet before you go to the next level, because it sucks to have 200k but almost no ships :/

Especially in the last mission, since you do not have the mothership with you. I was producing only out of the shipyard (didn't have any carriers) so it was quite hard :/

Otherwise it is actually quite easy to win.

Ion frigates + Destroyers + Battlecruisers + Dreadnaught really kicks ass :)

Here are some badges for everyone to use.

I put this pack together while playing the demo. I don't know if I ever posted it here, but it contains 30 Japanese kanji characters, in white and red variants, for a variety of different words and phrases.

Here are some samples.

And here's a badge pack I created just recently to use in my Pearl Harbor-inspired HW2 movie (in production), among other things.
