For that you need to learn how to UV Map the model, which is not easy. I only know Max tuts for that, but if you search around you should find some.

PM him :p
And as for which is easier modeling or skinning, i would have to say skinning is the easier of the two, by quite a long shot.

Yeah when i said skinning is easier, i didnt mean it was easy :D
Ive been skinning for 8 months or so now, only just really starting to get my skins down fast and effectively.

i was just wondering is there a program that can open .utx files and edit the images, coz the skin i'm doing is kind of based loosely on part of the soldier skin, thanks

yes u use UED and open that texture pack, then export them *they will be in .pcx format* then edit them to ur needs :)

thanks i looked at that but i didn't know what .pcx was so i asked here, right now where did i put that skin....

are some textures unexportable, coz when i try and export some UEd crashes, its the ones which are animated/moving that it does it to, so i think i'll just leave them unless anyone can come up with a solution,
thanx

If you mean the fire/water/etc. textures, they're not really even images (they're fractal textures generated/animated in real time), so you can't expect to be able to export them. You have to create those from within UEd.

w00t! What he said. :) There's UTX viewing program by Jesco Topp and Fordy that's probably useful to you as it only alows you to export non fractal textures, plus, you can browse all the UTX's at once. :)
http://www.planetunreal.com/fordy and look for UTX viewer.
