Yes, for the very first time, I am playing half-life. It just arrived yesterday, and I have been smacking headcrabs around a bit with my crowbar. Unfourtantly, i'm stuck on the first level :( Seemed to of taken a wrong turn or something and am going around in circles.
Must say, though, I like it  :D

I've been thinking about checking out Half-Life - all this hype about HL2 is almost getting me excited.

Half-life is a very fun game. The single player is a blast to play, and its the number one most played first person shooter online right now.

Same thing here, that is what made me get it. Go to www.gogamer.com and get it for $15 if you don't have bargain bin nearby. Amazon has it for the same price, too.
I got past the first level, finally, and now have been running around topside, but had to go back in. Just ran into those "alien octupus monsters" as the guard described them.
Have yet to DL CS and NS :D

I would avoid Counter-strike, its not as good as everyone says it is. Unless you go to a lot of LAN partys.

Thanks for the link Beo but I'll probably buy it locally unless gogamers ship to Ireland :)
I have Blue Shift which I have never played due to it being installed about 15 minutes before UT2k3 but I've been told to play HL first anyway. If only I could stop playing Vice City - the shortcut seems to wink at me from my desktop and I just cant resist.

actually why buy it when you can get it for free over steam? which is valves free online gaming thingy that lets you download all of their software. :)

If you liked the single player mode. Then you should play Svencoop. Battle Half life monsters with other ppl over the internet

yeah just download the steam installer and select half-life and it will download.
Steam uses a special bandwith technology developed by valve that allows even 56k users to download at speeds close to what broadband uers get. On my DSL I get download speeds of around 500 kb/sec on steam, Fumanchu was getting like 1.2mb/sec off of steam. its nice.

Thanks tool - just have to wait 29mins at fileplanet for the steam installer. :)
Edit: Turned out to be a 50 minute wait for a five second download.

I just went back and finished Half-Life again this week...
Now I'm working my through Opposing Forces, Blue Shift and a few more SP mods such as:
Todesangst & Todesangst2: der echte Feind (http://www.planethalflife.com/todesangst/)
Poke646 (http://www.poke646.com/)
They Hunger Trilogy (http://www.planethalflife.com/manke/theyhunger.htm)
Point of View (http://halflife.multiplayer.it/pov/)
Heart of Evil (http://www.planethalflife.com/heartofevil/default.asp)
Case Closed (http://www.planethalflife.com/caseclosed/)
I'm hoping to finish ALL of these before HL2 arrives. Should prove to be a nice challenge. :)
But even all these sweet SP mods won't stop me from playing The Last Great MP mod for Half-Life...Natural Selection 2.0! (http://www.natural-selection.org/)

Wow - steam rocks - how does that work? Does it download and install the whole game at the beginning or download it in stages? I have no clue - I just know that 15mins after installing steam I was playing HL. Cool.
The sound is pretty bad though - everyone sounds like Stephen Hawking. And Freeman moves so quickly its hard to get him lined up with keypads and ladders and stuff. Is this normal?

I was wanting to play halflife the other day, but I lost my CD a couple years ago. I may just break over and download it tonight or something .

Can't believe it's been more than four years ago I bought the game (original)...
Had to play it on a sloooow pc. But it ran. And I was glad it did :D
I finished it in 2 weeks. Yeah I took my time. Why not? Seems like most people just want to finish the game asap. No fun!
It's pretty much worth it really. Storyline isn't much different from the doom's, but there are many extras which make the game stand out.
Not to mention the creepy atmosphere :-)
Prepare for some good battles when you encounter the grunts :) But they're not the worst really.
It's hard talking about this game trying not to spoil anything.
Anyway, Opposing force: good add-on. But I was dissapointement cause one again, you're the hunted and not the hunter (bad guy)
:( Really spoiled the game for me.
You're in the same situation as Gordon.
They hunger: First part is brilliant. Fun! Tons of fun!
TH2 isn't quite the same, but it's still ok.
TH3 is weak :-/ that's a shame really.
Enjoy playing through the long sp game :D

man, by the time HL came out I was set. in the spring of 1998 my parents suprised the hell out of me by purchasing me a DELL 300mhz with 128 megs of memory, and a year later I purchased a 3D Banshee, just in time for Half-Life. I was the envy of all my friends back then :D

Well if I had known I could get it free off of steam, I would of...I have steam, thought those game links were just for starting up a game if you already had it :o I will DL the rest off of there, now. Do you get patches, too?

One good thing about buying your own copy of HL is that you can now play Firearms, Day of Defeat, etc. etc. STEAM only let's you play the games it offers. No add-ons.

some of you possess an obvious competitive streak, which is the only reason I'm posting this and I hope you all don't mind.
after about 20 times thru the game for all of us, some peeps I know and me had an e.t. contest.
our time through the game on the easiest skill setting - 4 and some hours. sorry, I can't remember exactly. I think it was a little short of 5 hrs.
god mode with weapons cheats hitting all switches, bells, and whistles - 1 hour 58 mins
here's the one thing about Blast Pit: try not to fall off of anything or you lose and that will require a restart.
tripping up like that is a small concern in Residue Processing, and we decided to allow it.
absolutely no holds barred just to the end of Nihilanth - 43 minutes.
to beat the last, you need to know precisely where only one thing is, and better than I did.
the timing ended with the change of maps after defeating Nihilanth. I think the start was in the lobby after the experiment, I really can't remember.
Nihilanth's death may be the only scripted event you can't avoid. I don't remember this for sure becaue we did it about 4 years ago. I can't remember who won, either, but most were within seconds of each other.
aww c'monyou guys and admit it. this is the most exciting proposition some of you've had today..even if it's from the other gender this time. ;)

half life is a great game and all, but the mods are really where its at. theres some pretty neat ones like an online soccer mod, to a bumper cars mod.
you guys should really try The Specialists mod (http://www.specialistsmod.net/), bascially a matrix/action movie type mod with tons of weapons, a great stunt and kung fu system, and lots of cool maps. its just like playing out a john woo action movie. i havent played any other mod (other than ns) since the new version came out.
the new natural selection 2.0 is also fun. nothing is more funnier than letting ur victims scream and suffer as u slowly digest them

but that part can be extremily annoying.
Yeah the room with the laser trip mines. I'm never a hurry. Normally I don't miss, but I take my time.
SHAME they had to repeat this in Opposing force
Just like "Pitworms' nest" made me think of "The Blast Pit" sigh.. etc etc..
for once I wished those black Ops would've been on my side :-/

Never happens to me. I always use a filter (is playing game) and the only time I get trouble is if there is a lock, already reserved spaces, or the server is just full. Just select the filter and click Update.
But suit yourself. I personally don't care for 3rd party server browsers. I've never had good experiences with em.
Oh, and when you get tired of HL, the one mod that should be required for all is Day of Defeat (http://www.dayofdefeat.com). It's the best WWII mod/game ever.
