View Full Version : [Case mods] EUREKA! My own solution to the beige drive silver case problem.

I have been pondering ever since I got my new case on how I would take care of the ugly beige drives... I don't want something permanent. I thought about doing the hidden-drive mod, but my DVD drive has a curved tray front, and the covers won't stay on too well...

Then I thought, "I wish I had one of those drive doors, that cover all the drives". Voila, I got the idea that I could drape a cloth (it would be like the signs in Morrowind, except not brown :)) over the drive bays. Now I need to find the material..

I'm looking for something like satin, perhaps shiny/sparkly. Silver, black, or deep semi-dark red. I'm going to hit some local hobby places sometime to see what I can find. Don't know what I'm going to decorate the cloth with, or how, but I'll figure something out.

I have no idea where to find the cloth but post some pics so I can see how it turns out, dude.

DeaJae: That's all well and good, but it doesn't match my case all that well and it isn't unique :)

Ok, more thoughts on the design.

The cloth will be a deep crimson red, satin, maybe velvet (mmm, velvet). It will be suspended by a bar, which will be suspended by a chain or thin rope on the top side of the case (It'll be easier to push off the side if it's suspended in a triangle formation). The cloth will be weighed down by multi-purpose metal spikes (they are essentially like earrings, except not for piercings. A bud of mine had a bunch of em' lining the bill of his hat) lining the bottom of it.

Why red? To compliment the lighting I'm going to eventually put in :)

Trouble is, how do I make the pivot-point at the top of the case without damaging the case? This is crucial - I want to be able to just remove the stuff whenever I am tired of the mod. Let me ask this: Would adhesives damage the paint? Are there any kind tha won't?

Have you considered just painting your bezels? I'd think that'd be easier. As far as attaching this veil I'm not sure what you'd use. What does your case look like?

I don't want to paint my bezels - I want the least permanent unique mod I can do. I have never seen a veil on a case before, and I think it'd be kickarse and suit my personality.

My case is a silver raidmax with a window - I don't have a picture off hand. Right below the window is 2 fans.

Does your case look like this? The veil idea is cool, making it work is another story. Personally I'd go with a "stealth drive" setup, where you basically move your disc drives back a bit and use the original case plates and attach them to the drive trays, hiding the drives altogether--but that's just me.

won't the fabric get caught in the drive when it shuts?

no clay, because it would hang down infront of the drive, and just press against it, not fold into it

Yeah, that's my case.

Dead: That was the original idea, but the original bay covers would be hard to modify IMHO in order to do that. Plus, it's not as cool IMHO as a veil :)

Clayeth: The veil is designed to move over to the side whenever i need access to the drives.

Implementing this will actually be pretty easy. I just need to get the materials.

I always use those cushioned double sided sticky pads to compensate for any curvature in the drives. A well done stealth can look really cool, especially when done with fibre optics. :hmm:
