I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread that we could post computer problems, information, and time required for fixes, etc...
Let me start this one by saying that I will be upgrading my current comp, and rebuilding my old one today.
I'm not sure exactly how long this will take, but I assume that it will last at least 4 hours (or more).
This also means that I will have to reinstall UT, maps, skins, etc...
However, I am currently making backups of that data, so no fear of losing it. :D
I'll be back as soon as possible.

Errr...
After spending the last 3 hours waiting for a DVD to burn, I've decided to put off working on my own comp until my vacation... 9 days of workless bliss... at the begining of next month.
However, I do have the other computer to work on, off and on tonight, which means that I will have to pull the extra HDD out of this comp and put it in my old one... which means that I'll STILL have to reinstall UT2...
...sigh...
it's gonna be one of those nights...

Oki... I keep getting this error when I try to run the updated UEd:
The procedure entry point ?qRandSeed@@3KA could not be located in the dynamic link library Core.dll.
I know we mentioned this in a thread before... but I do not recall the solution.
Help me out! Woo!
UPDATE:
I had to reinstall, and now all is well... I think...

Upgrading can be such Joy.. Yea right..
Sounds like you have the wrong version of the Core.dll file. Is there a new and mproved one out there?? BC or AX would be the man to ask that question...

The only problem I am currently having is this: occasionally, when I log off a user, my computer flat-out hangs. I can't figure out why. It isn't accessing the HD. It isn't doing anything ... it's just waiting. This drives me insane. So far, the only thing I can think of is that it is from the printer software I installed when I (finally) got a printer (Lexmark). Anyone else have trouble like this?

Windows has problems like this fairly often... my suggestion to you is to create a new admin account or recreate the account that is having the trouble.
I don't know why exactly, but this seems to solve the problem in most cases.

Here's what you can do ICE. Go to User Accounts in the Control Panel.
Delete all accounts except yours. Then don't log off just shut down. If you need to have more then one User Account try to create a new one for them after you have setup the printer. Its worth a try..

Buggy windows. What a pain in the arse. You know, something weird happened late last night. I deleted 2.5 gigs from my recycle bin, and in my computer, it showed I had 2.5 more gig available on my hard drive. Now here's where it gets weird. After adding a shortcut to my desktop and moving some around, one of my icons moved to an empty space that I don't remember emptying. Anyway, I put it back, then went back to double-click on my computer. Lo and behold, I had 5 more gigs of free space. How the hell this happened, I don't know. I like having the space, though. So far I can't find anything missing that should be there, so beats the hell outta me what was wrong. I haven't tried sleeping my computer yet, but I wonder if whatever was causing windows to misreport my HD size was also causing the hanging. We'll see. Laterz!

Ice obviously doesn't realize how Windows likes to "hold on" to things, even if you don't want them. Windows likes to make its own little copies of everything, especially if you delete them. So just letting stuff sit in your recycle bin doesn't actually delete anything, as well as the fact that sometimes even after emptying the recycle bin, Windows sometimes doesn't bother actually deleting the links to the files until some odd time afterwards (for most of us that occasionally shut down our computers, that's the time).
So, Ice, if this happened right after you emptied your recycle bin, don't be surprised, and also, it has nothing to do with your hang ups. I also have a Lexmark printer, and I have also noticed those "hangs" when logging off a user, but only after I used the printer. Since the printer came with software that automatically turns on the printer whenever you send something to the spooler, it also obviously has something running in memory waiting to see that happen. Afterwards, it probably has some sort of bad code that doesn't allow it to shut down normally, which means when you log off a user, Windows can't figure out a way to turn it off, and your comp hangs. I forget whether this works or not, Ice, but try simply turning off your printer before logging off Windows.
PS - Lurk is right about this, though, Windows has these "hang ups" often. Example - I can never shut down Windows with my ICQ software open. I always have to turn off the software first if I don't want the comp to hang while shutting down.

Here's a new one for ya. WAB Notification was stopping my system from shutting down. I kept getting the END Program now box when I was shutting down. I did the research and found out what App. was causing this. Outlook was the problem. I did my Office Upgrade and still had the problem and then I did a little testing. When I clicked the X to close Outlook it would still be running in the Processe's (Alt.-Ctrl-Del). When I CLicked File-Exit it wouldn't be running and Windows would shut down fine. ANother shining example of an XP Quirk.. LOL

Hey guys, you need to watch out for an email from MS offering a new patch as an attachment;
Virus Spreading Easily
http://news.com.com/2100-7349_3-5078696.html
A new virus going by the name Swen and Gibe.F is making its way through email clients at a brisk pace that highlights the depth of security issues in Windows. Not to belabor the point, but this is such a perfect example, I couldn't let it slip by without at least a little attention. New security flaws are not where the big damage occurs. It's the old ones that have had patches available for a significant period of time that often bite hardest. Swen and Gibe.F illustrates just how serious the lack of applied patches on the part of end users truly is. A two year old IE flaw is the target of this latest bug, and it's spreading at a pace that rivals most other email worms. Contributing to the spread is the fact that the worm appears to come from Microsoft sporting a security patch, prompting unaware users to launch the virus-laden payload. Issuing effective patches quickly means very little. The number of flaws must subside significantly in order for any real impact to be seen down the road.

Lately everyone has been finding out that I have been having problems with my internet connection when playing UT...which is one of the reasons I did not participate in the scrim.
Here is something...not sure if I would consider it to be good news...but there is still hope that things will clear up for me. Here's what I got out of Comcast...
--------------------
Dear Mr. Reifsneider,
Thank you for your e-mail regarding the Comcast High-Speed Internet. We
understand this browsing issue can be frustrating. We apologize for any
inconvenience this may cause you and we will do our best to assist you
with this issue.
At this point there are still reported power outages in certain areas of
PA affecting servers which would cause this connection and browsing
issue. Comcast is working to restoring the service. We do apoligize
for the inconvenience and appreciate your paitentience.
Due to our Systems being upgraded I am not able to provide you with a
ticket at this time.
If there is anything else that we can help you with regarding this or
any other issue, you can reach our technical support via email. If you
go to www.comcast.net and click on 'Service Center' on the left-hand
side of the screen. Now click on 'Help' on the left and now you will see
our 'Live Chat Support'.
Thank you for choosing Comcast.
Sincerely
Kimberley R.

As some of you may know, I'm planning on buying/building myself a new comp. This is now a fact since yesterday, Dyson was on the family puter from 5 to almost midnight. Now I ask you, What's a fragger suppose to do from 5 to midnight without a computer?. The answer is (drumrool).....NOTHING. I did absolutly nothing. Damn I was bored. So here is what I came up with so far.
Intel Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz Processor
Intel 875P chipset P4C800/P4C800-E Asus Motherboard
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900 Ultra Video Card
Sound Blaster Audigy Gamer sound card (Already purchased)
1024 Mb PC3200 RAM
Western Digital 120 Gig Hard Drive
As for the case and power supply I could leave that up to TAZ since he's the DA MAN when it comes to that (and everything else).
If you find something wrong with what I want so far please lest me know. I will need the help I can get to build my fragbox.

As you all know I have been having problems with TS latley. It starts a loop at various times and will not stop. Then trying to ALt+ESc to minimize UT so that I can the ctrl+Alt+Delete so that I cha shut down TS will occasionally cause me to crash. I am using the new version of TS and 2225V of UT . It might be my sound card, but I am not sure about that. I did notice that with in the windows sound settings that I had the right drivers loaded. But, I also noticed that I didn't load the Sound blaster Software manger program. Could that be the problem.?

OK, lets see if we can help ya sort this out.
This Connector Here is the AuxPowerhttp://www.antec-inc.com/images/auxpw.jpg and
does not plug into your MoBo. You can remove the Spiral Wrap and try to hide it behind something. I actually cut mine off to get it completely out of the way.
This Connector is for http://www.antec-inc.com/images/fanonly.jpg Fan Only and IMOP a complete waste of time. Hide that one also.
The Gray Cable with all those pins are for the Front USB and Firewall Ports. Some MOBO's have expandable USB and Fireport connectors on them and thats where you could plug them in. Refer to yourMOBo Manual. If you don't use USB and Firewire all that much odds are you don't need to hook them up. Hide those suckers to.
You should have 3 Power Connectors plugged into your MOBO. Main ATX, the Small Square One 12V, and a regular looking Molex 12V. The rest plug into the HD's Graphic Card etc.
The Fan Only and AuxPower is not needed and the Front Ports aren't needed. Hope that helps!!

That depends on what your willing to spend and what you prefer AMD or INTEL. If you really want a Killer Rig and money then I could make a few suggestions. I see you want a new Mobo and CPU. Does this also mean new RAM??? If not then you have to match your current ram up with whats on the market.
Here's a High End Suggestion:
CPU: Pentium 4-3.2 GHz Processor Retail Box - $394
Cooling: Included - N/A
Motherboard: ABIT IC7-MAX3 - $207
Memory: Corsair XMS 1GB PC-3200 LLPRO (2X512) - $328
Or My Current Favorite:
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Retail - $425
Cooling: Included - $0
Motherboard: Asus K8V Deluxe - $138
Memory: Corsair XMS 1GB PC-3200 LLPRO (2X512) - $328

Got a big night tonight.
Have to move the room around for the new desk (it's gonna be sweet!)... which means I have to take the comp apart and put it back together... and since I'll be doing that, I might just install XP Pro tonight too.
That, of course, will require a slight bit of cd burning.
Once I get everything put together, I'll come into IRC while I'm burning my backups... then I'll be gone for another hour or two... and return when the change is complete.

I wanted to alert you all to a lil problem I had to deal with for about 2 hours yesterday morning.
Downloader.Apropos.D
This is spyware, but much MUCH worse... it's a trojan... and it's damn hard to get rid of.
Spybot S&D couldn't get rid of it.
Webroot Spysweeper couldn't get rid of it.
AVG Anti-virus couldn't get rid of it.
I had to manually remove this Trojan, myself... but there's more to it than that...
You see, if you try to delete this straight off your HDD, it reboots your system and reinstalls itself.
There's only one way around it;
Boot into safe mode, find the directory that it was installed (Root:/Windows/system32, in my case), and manually delete it.
No no.. that's not all.
Then you have to go to Start>Run>regedit and look under Local Machine>Software>Auto Loader and delete any references to ADupdater, etc... there was only one under auto loader, so it was pretty simple for me.
After doing this, you'll want to go reboot and run Spybot S&D, Spyware Sweeper, any other adware proggies you have, remove everything regarding Apropos, and then run your anti-virus again to make sure there are no other trojans on your system that Apropos was hiding from you.
After doing this, AVG found another trojan called Siboco embedded in my windows media player, and the only way I could fix it was to completely uninstall it.
You guys should check into this immediately... as in right now.

Pretty nice right? But can I make it a lot nicer for a small difference in cost?
The problem is in the mobo...there I have chosen a "New" ASUS
But there are four to choose from with the processor I have chosen.
Albatron K8X800 PRO VIA K8T800 Chipset AGP8X w/LAN,USB2,&Audio
MSI K8T Neo FSR VIA K8T800 Chipset AGP8X w/LAN,USB2, &Audio
GigaByte GA-K8N Pro nForce3 Chipset AGP8X w/LAN,USB2,IEEE,&Audio
NEW ASUS K8V SE Deluxe VIA K8T800 Chipset AGP8X w/LAN,USB2,IEEE,&Audio
MOBO Stats (http://www.cyberpowersystem.com/highendsystem/a64board.htm)
Now is the ASUS really worth $53 more dollars than the Albatron which is run on the same chipset?
I'm thinking the main reason the ASUS costs more is because it comes with a Wi-Fi slot for wireless LAN upgrade which I'm probably not going to use.
What I could do with that extra $53 dollars (and a couple more bucks):
Upgrade to an AMD ATHLON64 3200+ CPU
Upgrade to 1024 MB (512 MB x2) Corsair XMS High Performance Memory w/ Heat Spreader

here's what i think-
when it comes to computers, it's changing so damn fast that even if you get a super mega ultra sicky rig so powerful that you must connect it directly to hydro electricity central, you still gonna have to change it for specific needs in around 4 years. does it worth it ?

Well if I build it from cyberpower I only have that ASUS to choose from. Getting all the parts myself will probably end up being...messy.
I also did discover another thing. After doing some measurements...I realized the 19" monitor will not fit into my room. So I'm downsizing to the 17" one...which is the same size I have now. Works fine. That saves me even more money.
So here is what it comes down to...
Being that I saved $70 dollars just by downsizing the monitor 2 inches which wouldnt fit anyway...I can go with the ASUS mobo...and I saved enough to go with an upgrade to athlon 64 3200+ , Corsair XMS, or upgrade to the ATI 9800 Pro 256MB
What do you think is the best thing to do?

Corsair XMS would be my bet. The better the ram the more stable your rig will run.

Alright fellaz. I got another question for you...and it has nothing to new with a NEW computer.
This peice of **** some call a sony VAIO has a strange folder that has some extremely old stuff in it.
I go to:
C:\Documents and Settings\sony user\Local Settings\Temp
In that folder is 3,665 Files and 265 Folders. 1.12 GB worth of them. WTF ARE THEY THERE FOR? The oldest folder in there is from Saturday, September 08, 2001. Oldest file being from Thursday, January 21, 1999.
Almost every folder I open is empty anyway...then there are hundreds of .ABI files, .exe files, .dmp files, and thousands of .tmp files. Can I delete the thing? Whats it there for?
If you know something I don't...could you tell me? Or give me some advice? Thanks.

Try to go under tools, folder options, view, show hidden files and folders. Might just bring something up. If not, they are "temp" folders, delete em.
But I would wait or a second opinion --> TAZ or Lurk

I would try looking under control panel>>add/remove software and see if it's listed.
If it is listed, see how often you use it... if it says never, then uninstall, go back to the folder and delete everything.
It's likely that you're not using it, tho... considering how old your files are, but it's best (and safest) to check it out in add/remove software first.
If there's no listing in add/remove software, then I believe it should be safe to completely remove it from your system.

I noticed your PING is 195 in the one screen. I am thinking Graphics Card Drivers.
When your Crappy SONY VAIO was running almost decent what Version of the Catalyst Drivers was you using? You installed new drivers maybe something just isn't right with them. Sometimes installing newer drivers onto a older card doesn't work. I am using old drivers on my ProphetIII which runs pretty good. You have tried pretty much everything else but bad frames or caused by Bad Graphics. Is your Card getting to hot?? You said the second map it started to act up. Check your Airflow, pull the card out clean the fan real good. Uninstall Drivers and reinstall them. Your stuff wasn't acting up this bad before.. Cards go bad so maybe thats the case..

Well I went back two catalyst drivers. Played another game of thorns and all seemed well...but then citadel wouldn't get off the loading screen. I'll have to test this theory out at practice or whenever somebody to frag with shows up around here.

Well, graphics have nothing to do with one's ping. I would suggest instead calling your ISP and seeing if they can detect any kind of problem with your connection. Do a tracert to our server and see if there are any particular hops that ping bad (you'll have to do at least ten to check for consistent results). Do you have cable or dsl? If cable, maybe somebody is turning on their tivo or something and causing your bandwidth to go to crap. But my main point is that your hardware isn't causing bad pings... unless it's the modem itself. Hmm, might want to get your cable or dsl company to switch out your modem for you. It may make a big difference. How old is the one you currently have? If it's around 2+ years, I'd definitely have it switched out, but they can also start to go bad before that.

No Duh..
We all know Graphics Cards have nothing to do with PING.. I was just pointing out his high PING. BC's problem has nothing to do with his connection. His VAIO is having problems running the game. Keys not responding, framerates dropping to <10, running laggy even with details set to low. Those current problems and the fact that he could atleast run the game somewhat prior to the past month makes me wonder if its not some kind of Driver or Hardware problem. Its very well documented that ATI put out crappy drivers on occasion and going back to a previous version that actually worked is logical. Don't ya think??

Last night while you guys were at "practice" my mom actually made an attempt to help me out. She doesn't know any more than I do...but two heads are better than one right? Heres what we did.
Turned off the puter and ripped out the video card. Blew all the dust out of the fan, and out of the slot on the mobo...put it back in and it still didn't help. Just to narrow things down I fired up 2K3...and that does it too. So blaming the game is out.
When I locked up in bollwerk with the flag and ran into the lava...I leaned down to see if i could tell WHAT beeped at me, but I couldn't tell. If I had the old nvidia drivers for that 32MB card that came with the puter, I'd slap that in for ****s and giggles...but cant find em. Either the mobo is going bad, one of the sticks of memory is going bad (Do you think a 256MB PC133 Memory stick would last six years? I know I don't) or the vid card is dying, those are the only things I think it could be.
And hardware getting hot can't be it because Taz had me take off the side panel for better airflow. I'm not gonna hurt my head on it. This computer works fine for everyday school use and stuff. Running games is a no-go. So I'm gonna have to excuse myself from practices for a while until I get a puter. Count on two months atleast. Just gonna work my ass off for more money.
BTW taz...Corsair came down $50 on cyberpowersystem. I dunno if its a special or what...but if the price goes back up later I'll be pissed. I got a nice Athlon 64 3500+ mapped out for under $1600

www.guru3d.com or nvidia.com fro NVIDIA Drivers.
You can actually test your ram out very easy. Pull 1 stick and fire up UT2K3, if it still occurs turn off puter and swap sticks and try again. If it still occurs its not ram. Pull ATI Card put in TNT32MB card and give that a shot, if that doesn't work you can scratch Graphics and Ram off List. Since this only occurs During Gameplay, makes me think RAM or Graphics Card. These things are used alot during gameplay. The only other thing would be Harddrive (Virtual Memory) Is there a Default Settings Button you can click on?? Now since your back on the New Puter Bus lets talk Barebones!! Lets list the Bare Minimum you would need to Play!
1) Mobo
2) CPU
3) Ram
4) Heatsink (Only if CPU is OEM)
5) CD Rom
6) Hardrive (Nope, I can donate a 40GB WD)
7) Case/PS (Nope, Got one)
You should have the rest.. Will have to switch Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse back and forth between VAIO and New (Bone Box) <<Theme>>
Then you slowly but surely save up and get rest of gear!!
Lets see what we can do!!
Here's a barebones from Monarch!

Well Hell Folks!! Bad Site Warning!!
I decided to upgrade my Fragbox and figured I would save some money and not order from NewEgg. I ordered the following from GameVe (http://www.gameve.com/gve/default.aspx) on 7/3/04.
MB-ASUS-018 1 ASUS A8V DELUXE K8T800PRO Wi- Fi MOTHERBOARD RETAIL $145.00
MMN-COR-078 1 CORSAIR 1GB (2X512MB) PC3200 XL KIT SERIES MEMORY RETAIL $340.00

CPU-AMD64-0004 1 AMD ATHLON 64 3500+ 939PIN OEM $485.00
ACC-SUN-0046 1 BLUE LED ACRYLIC CASE FEET RETAIL $16.99
I received the order today 7/9/04, I didn't order overnite so time wise was OK. The problem arose when I opened the box and reviewed my order.
1- The RAM has B.O. wrote on it. (Website Clearly Shows In Stock)
2- The LED Case Feet turned into a 80mm CREAIR Fan!! (Very Cheap Looking Fan) Its not even listed on the WebSite..
Thats only the beginning.. I dialed their 1-800 and got the Phone Answering Run Around for like 30 minutes. Dial 0 for operator, Sorry busy leave a message, Dial 1 for Extensions or dial your parties extension. I tried 10 names and numbers, nobody answered all voice mail.
I hung up waited a bit and tried again and finally someone picked up the damn phone. I explained to him my situation, and he put me on hold to check on the RAM. Its on Back Order.. I know you freaking Idiot, Why is it on B.O. when your Site states its in Stock and usually ships in 2-3 days??? He couldn't figure that out. I then told him about not receiving the Case Feet and receiving a Fan I didn't order. He told me I had to RMA the FAN! ***, a 3 dollar fan that I didn't order has to be RMA back to them?? He kept saying I am just trying to help doing my job etc. It still doesn't make sense. How can you RMA something you didn't order?? We will put a shipping label in the box when we send your RAM and CaseFeet. When will that be? Not sure next week sometime.. Talk about some BAD Real BAD Customer Service.. That has to be one of the worst sites to order from , I will not be ordering anything ever again from GameVe just to save a few bucks. Yea the prices where cheaper on a few items but its not worth the grief.. Hell hopefully the Mobo works hate to have to RMA it..

I've got a noob question for you.
Where do the fans plug into directly? And do I have to wait til my puter comes to know if I will need 3 or 4 pin connectors? I have a feeling ima need some extra wiring when I put a fan in the front of the case.
And If I'm gonna buy some sleeving for the fan wires, will 1/4" sleeving be big enough?

What you want is a Fan Controller.. Then you can buy 3 Pin Fans. Most fans come as 3 Pin except the real powerful ones like Delta's and Tornado's. CompUSA had some but I don't see them online. PCToys but these from FrozenCPU are what they look like.
http://www.frozencpu.com/images/products/detail_hires/bus-18.jpg
That way you plug your fans into the back of the controllwer and can turn down the noise when needed.
If not Motherboards come with 3-4 3 pin connectors for fans. If you need to use a Molex connector then you can always by a special connector..

Remember; the less you have running in the background, the better your system will run.
Even tho it's time consuming, this is one of my favorite parts of putting together a new comp... because usually (by now) you already know exactly what you want on it, and installing what you want and need should be cheese. :)

Never got a runtime error on UT2k4, so I can't help there, other than to say that there's prolly an answer in the help sections of Epic or Atari's website.
As far as IE goes, I've had so many damn problems with it that I quit using both Win Media Player and IE.
I use Firefox and the updated version of Winamp, now.
Firefox has plenty of info on helping you get adjusted and changing your settings to be more like IE.

Lurker, the AMD 64bits CPU's are backward compatible with 32 bit software. They even run better on the 64 bit systems. I have the same Mobo and CPU as BC and I have no problems running any software.
BC, I have gotten those errors before on occasion. I would restart UT join that map in Instant Action then rejoin the server. That usually worked. I have found that a few servers running maps with same names as mine didn't work. I had to wait for map to change or pick another server. If your getting that on every server then check the following.
1) Turn Off XP Firewall..
2) Check your Settings in UT to make sure they are correct.
3) Get all your Critical Updates and other Crap from MS.
4) Tweak your XP.
I will work with ya when I get home but I bet you will be all twaeked by then.

Have you tried a fresh clean install of UT2004?
Most of the errors folks had occured after they installed a new patch or bonuspack. You installed 3270 and then went back to 3236. Try a fresh install. Completely remove all traces of UT2004 and give it a go. There isn't many answers for it.. Drivers and reinstalls... Do the search and read for your self.. 4) Run Critical Updates and Install latest DirectX.

OK, here's a shot in the dark.
You told me you added a NIC Card. That means you only have 1 PCI card and 1 AGP Card. If they added the WiFi Crap and it is actually in a PCI slot don't worry about it. If you added the NIC to PCI 1 the slot right below the AGP slot then thats your problem. They share IRQ's and don't play nice together. Open your ASUS Mobo maunual and check out page 2-16. If your in slot 1 move it to slot 3. Move the damn thing to another slot anyway ytou could be sharing IRQ's with something else you have enabled.
Now don't put your book away, I want you to read the BIOS section. Lets go through some items that you need to change.
Main Menu Page 4-12
Nothing to change just make sure its detecting everything.
Advanced Menu PAge 4-15
CPU Config. We aren't going to mess with these settings.
HyperTransport Config. Defaults are fine. 1000, 16, 16
Memory Config. Defaults Fine Leave on Auto..
AMD Cool N' Quiet -- Make sure its Disabled.. (I don't use it)
Go back to Advanced and click on Chipset Page 4-21.
AGP Bridge & Config.
Pretty much default but change your AGP Aperture size to 128.
Go Back to Advanced and Click on Onboard Device Config. Page 4-24.
Here's were we turn off and on alot of crap you don't use or need.
Onboard AC 97 Audio- Enabled (You use it right!!!)
OnChip SATA Boot ROM- Disabled (You don't have a SATA Hardrive If you get one in the future just enable)
OnBoard Promise Controller- Disabled (See Above)
Onboard LAN- Disabled (You have a NIC Card)
Serial Port1 & 2: Disabled (Please don't tell me you have still have crap that uses Serial Ports)
Parallel Port- If you have printer Select EPP
Onboard Game/MIDI Port -Disabled (Enable if you plug in Joystick etc.)
DONE- Go back to Advance Menu Click on PCI PnP.
First Choice Plug and Play O/S- I enabled mine!! Your Choice..
I disabled Speech Config. Instant Music & Didn't mess with Power Settings. Save and exit changes.
Note this won't void warranty either will reformatting Harddrives. Changing Hardware, Modding, stuff like that would. Don't be scared of your BIOS, just note your changes in the book with a pencil and in the future you can refer back if you ever need to change them again. BTW, thats where most of your OverClocking is done.. Hopefully you had your NIC Card in PCI 1 and moving it will fix the problem. Its a known fact that if you use a AGP card nothing should go into PCI 1.. Good Luck Little Dude..

Well, I appreciate your trying to help, but the NIC card was in slot 3, nothing is in slot 1.
I did check the BIOS settings that night when I got home from work. All was set at what you said it should be. Right now the fragbox is on the ping pong table, in ITS box. I'm sending it back and getting a replacement. Gonna call them up and get an RMA number tomorrow, which is six days from delivery date. I have to do it within 7.
I'm not gonna deal with changing all kinds of settings to TRY and get it to work. A computer shouldn't be this F'ed up right out of the box. And being that Internet explorer has conflicts with a specific file, and being that there is NO trace of Microsoft Help on this computer, its clearly not a full install of windows XP. So its in its box, gonna be shipped back out tomorrow or tuesday, and that'll be the end of it.

He tried to tell me to reinstall windows. I said I would if you sent me a windows cd. So, he said all I have to send back is the tower, I'm gonna leave a note inside stating the numerous problems I was having. Hopefully they'll fix it and send it back. It'll probably be a while tho.

*BC's PEESEE Update*
I called them around lunchtime, and was on the phone for over half an hour.
First, they didn't have an RA number under my name, so they didn't know I sent one. The tech guy eventually told me to try calling the repair department after he asked me all kinds of numbers and stuff.
I called them, they confirmed the shipping address since the RMA numbers got screwed up somewhere. The tech guy that is working on it is coming in this afternoon, and fixing a puter takes one to two weeks  . They said they should have an update on its status on wednesday or thursday.
So atleast it didn't get lost. And it only took them a week to start working on it :(

Ok...I gave them a ring around 1pm EST today. I was very happy to find out they knew where it was instead of telling me they didn't have it.
They said it was in testing now and should be ready to ship out on tuesday or wednesday. I can call on wednesday to check up on it and possibly get a tracking number on it.
So if all goes well, and it works when I get it back, I'll be fired up and kickin a little more ass.

Me comp is in the new tower now, thanks (and admiration) to my cousins Tom and Mike.
Sounds like a new machine, and thanks to a few systemboard upgrades (again, thanks to Tom and Mike), it's running nice and smoooooth. :)
Also got a few other minor problems tweaked out, and added my older 40g HDD.
Now I've got to go thru the arduous process of running thru the old drive and getting rid of what I don't need, and xfering what I do... so I can wipe the drive and use it for backups and storage (more than likely).
Can't wait to try it out on ya tomorrow morning, SS. ;)

My partitions;
System (Windows installation, system proggies) 10gig
Games (UT2k3 & 2k4, Doom3, Fallout2... etc) 40gig
Apps (apps I've downloaded off the inet, MP3 storage) 20gig
Backup (this should be obvious) 10gig
With the extra 40 gig in there, I'll prolly create another 2 partitions... 20gig for MP3s and 20gig for who knows what. :D

Make sure the floppy is in right (I think it moved).
Probably gonna giving wrapping the wires another go.
Install maps and bonus packs of such for ut.
Install frontpage
I'll need someone to help me set my volume for mic and stuff again.
I also got this cool wallpaper changer. Everytime i boot windows, it pulls another pic from a folder. Guess what...its a folder full of high-res heidi woooooooooot. Its pretty neat I like it.
And I just got a model of a hopped up avalanche. Big chromes, all white body, slammed. It looks neat. Sitting on top of my desk :)

Used it for about 3 years, actually... and it's never required a .dll that I'm aware of.
It's made as a freeware stand alone proggy, and you can rip from cd to wav or mp3, mp3 to wav or standard cd format, or wav to either.
With my P4 it takes about 5-7 minutes to rip an entire cd... if that long.

Sounds to me like your CD-ROM isn't hooked up right. Either that or you have a screwed up driver. Let me ask you this: are you using your CD-ROM or your burner drive to do the ripping? Finally, the only other thing to check out is the sound card, its connections and its drivers. Do you have this problem with ALL music?
Bonecrusher

6th Sep 2004, 10:53 AM
OK, so it's not a sound card/device issue. That's good. Hmm, maybe you have a broken CD-ROM drive? It could be the lense or some other internal thing. Have you tried using your burning drive to rip/encode? Oh, another thing: if you are running SP2 that could be the cause. Why? I don't know. It just seems to screw everything up anyway. :P

Bonecrusher
10th Sep 2004, 10:08 PM
Hey taz...what are possible problems you can have with big fans?
Because I booted my machine when I installed it and the startup screen first said overclocking failed press F2 to go back to defaults. I did that.
Then I rebooted again and it said CPU fan error press f1 to resume.
What do you think is up?
Bonecrusher
10th Sep 2004, 11:12 PM
Nevermind I figured it out.
By doing some google searching and looking around...I found out that the CPU fan failed message was coming up because my heatsink isn't plugged into the mobo.
It was...but being that my fan controller had a spot for it that automatically adjusts speed according to the heat...I put it in there. Then I went into the BIOS and turned off the Wait for F1 if error thing.
Then I had the problem of that POST lady saying that my CPU fan failed. So I turned her off too. All better now.
I just hope the 120mm fan won't take away from the vid card as they are using the same power cable from the PSU.
Right now all is well :)
EDIT: 1 120mm Exhaust fan...and three 80mm intake fans.
I was having a problem with taking the 80mm off the back and putting it next to the HD. Only problem was...HD got in the way. After staring at it for a few minutes I realized I could move the HD up higher in the cage and make room for the fan :) I'm proud of myself now woot  I've only been working on this bastich since 9:30...its now 12:10. Time for bed.

Well, I got the game up and running and it sure do look pretty. I am only having sound and mic issues. For some reason the sound sucks. I don't know if this is the onboard sound device or just old drivers. And again, for some reason my mic broadcasts to TS very quietly. I can't quite figure it out. Taz, do you have any suggestions, seeing as you have the same mobo?
Make sure you load the Software for the Onboard Sound. I don't use the intergrated sound but I think Boney does. He had some minor problems when first sitting it up. I know you need to load the software, and then configure everything from the software. Glad you got everything back up. Once you get everything up and tweaked, your RIG is going to be SWEET!!

As far as I can tell, the realtek al c850 audio driver (realtek ac'97 audio for via driver) is what is being used, which I loaded from the mobo driver disc. I doanloaded a driver update from the Asus website, but the files in the package are identical, so that can't be it either. BC, what did you do to get it to work right?

Hey guys. I am having issues with my front USB ports. For some reason, windows won't recognize devices I plug into them if they don't have software installed for the device. (I think. So far, the only thing that works on them is my Gravis Gamepad Pro joystick, and I had to install the Gravis software for it to be recognized.) Any ideas? Well Ice...chances are those front USB ports have to have cables running into the mobo somewhere. Mine in particular are pretty much in the middle/bottom part of the mobo. Its all these seperate little black connectors. Same as the front audio ports plug into the lower left corner of the mobo. Stupid looking little plugs, maybe you don't have them all plugged in right?

Taz is correct. The USB joystick wouldn't work if they weren't plugged in right. I even tried unplugging the joystick and inserting the USB plug there. Maybe it is something in the Bios allowing for plug and play in the front USB ports....
