I just got an sb Extigy + Inspire 5500 surround speaker system and for
some reason the sound is even MORE horrible now - like locational
sounds are cut of to the extreme.

Take a map like Asbestos, I go in the LG room and I can bearly hear the
generators except when I allmost jump on them, then they go extremely
loud, same with weapon explosions and all other locational sounds, if
something is a little bit away you can't hear it, like the sound radius
on everything is set very small.

Also of I am in a room and just peek into the next room the sound cuts
of 100% so I can't hear people coming around corners at all.

I tried the new OpenALL from the official site but that just made it more
extreeme.

If I put a DVD on everything sounds awesome.

Is UT2003's hardware sound just this bad? UT99's surround sounded
WAY better than this, and I could actually pinpoint where people were
with just the slightest noise.

Well that sucks then, seeing as they recommend people to get the
audigy card on the back of the box and on the official site.

the Audigy cards don't use Hardware audio, using hardware audio makes the processor do all the work from what I remember...

you have to have a card(Or one of the nForce mobos) that actually does hardware encoding to get the correct output...

somebody correct me if I'm wrong though...

Im getting the feeling that to get any 3D sound at all, I ALSO
have to get a motherboard that can do the DD encoding?

Because it sounds like the sounds that SHOULD be coming out of
my rear speakers are not there at all, like its not getting output at all.

But with a DVD there is sound out of all speakers in both PROLogic
Surround AND in Dolby Digital so my setup seems to be ok.

Dolby Digital support is only on the Soundstorm audio as far as i know. As for the audigy, for proper DD decoding you have to route through one of them... I don't know what the REAL problem is, but on my SB live 5.1 I never experienced a problem in Hardware+EAX on when I was in plain hardware....other than when looking directly up or down.

Yeah I know, I was just using the DD from my DVD to test that
my system worked and was setup properly.

Its just disapointing that the sound is so bad, like I can stand somewhere
and hear a generator go hmmmmm and then move my mouse 1 centimeter
to the left or right and the sound is gone, like an on/off button + all I
realy hear is spread out stereo, not 3d audio at all.

In old ut when I played with the old Dolby ProLogic 4 speaker
system I could hear if someone picked something up behind me
to the left and predict using audio clues, now in the latest greatest
ut2003 sound is next to useless - try starting a botmatch on say
antalus with no bots, then add one bot and stay where you are
and use the audio cues such as pickups to locate the bot.

That's allmost impossible, only reason I know where people are, is
because I know where stuff is around the levels, so I use that to
locate people when I hear it gets picked up, locational audio is horrible.

I am currently running Hardware+EAX audio on my Audigy2 with no problems. My guess is that there may be a problem with the Audigy1 series of cards in UT2k3 (which the Extigy is based on). I would try different audio settings and see if those make any difference. Also make sure you have the latest drivers and firmware.
