The easy way would be to add the right kind of background music to set the mood. In fact you could use a certain piece of music to listen to while you're designing the map itself. If you have a particular theme in mind, listening to the right music can help set up the right feel.

I was alluding to something like a sunset and/or sunrise on a deserted uninhabited island, isn't that peaceful?

Im also going to write a rant on map atmosphere on the wiki.

a feeling is being created by the perfect balance between all aspects, starting from architecture, to details, to light, to music, to sound to effects etc
cliches work fine too, all those things you see in horror movies for examples
its emotion, and emotions arent bound to laws and rules, hard to make up a schedule on how to work then

^^ he said it..

its true.
its more feeling you have.. and when you learn how to use the editor (etc) you can 'un'realize it in the editor.. its liek a fantasy you want to draw on paper.. it will never be so good as your fantasy... but practice.. and youll get it right..

I disagree, you can make a level emotional with just geometry and lighting. In most cases textures, sounds, and music just make it seem tacky.

Granted if done well, you should theoreticaly have a more emotional level with the addition of proper sounds, music, and textures.

I personaly find that the best way to figure out what makes an emotional scene is to read some novels. Pay attention to the details that the author describes, the colours used, the sounds made, the settings described, because your imaginative interpretation is probably a better blueprint for what makes you feel than what any movie has rendered.
