What the hell. That's just sick. Another, and so far the worst, example of how media will do anything to make money.

Bwahahahahahhahahh!
Nasubi won his first contest on February 8th. He got some jelly, a 1560 yen value, leaving him with 998 440 yen left to win. That day, he ate food for the first time in two weeks! On February 22nd, he won a 5 kg bag of rice. Unfortunately, he had no cooking utensils. At first he tried eating it raw, but eventually devised a cooking method where he put it in an empty can beside a burner for an hour until it was "cooked". He ate about a half cup of rice a day using two pens for chopsticks.
He looks really distressed.

10 to 1 there's a tv-show like that in the USA or Europe within a few years ...
It's not just the Japanese ... it's people in general that are willing to behave like idiots just for a little air-time and/or a little price.
(altough I'm not sure who's more sick : the idiot that enter such contests, the producers that put it on tv or the morons that watch it ?)

poor guy ;)
i really looks like a fake though (on one of the pics he's showing something at the camera, which means he KNOWS he's filmed :hmm:

Yes he did know he was filmed from what I heard but this show was not faked.

I wouldn't mind it if the guy knew what was going to happen. Afterall, if he wants to do that, then it's up to him to choose. But he was kidnapped. If this would happen around here, the TV producer would be arrested in a matters of minutes. Of course, he might have actually known what he was going to do since this article doesn't scream "credibility".

Knowing what is going to happen and being able / smart enough to stop it are different things.
There's this Stephen King / Richard Bachman storie about an impossible marathon (anyone that's too slow gets shot ...). At the end the main character is so far gone that he keeps on going despite the fact that he's already 'won' ... (I guess he either had seen a lot of Japanese tv-shows or reality is worse than whatever we can think of)

At the end of the book he crash a plane (with him and the producer of the show or someone who was tracking him IIRC) in the building that makes those show.
Assuming this article is wrong and he signed a contract to get in that (and that the doctor didn't lie to much), then the show is acceptable (no matter how sick it is). I'm guessing there was some sort of prize at the end of it.

Ah yes, I think I did read The Long Walk too, but I can't remember if I ever finished it.

The Running Man (not the lame movie that was based on the book (or rather it happened to have the same name, the hero in the book was a real poor loser not an unjustly punished good guy)) featured some sick shows as well (like people with breathing problems running in a wheel ..., think 'Fear Factor' with sick people instead of healthy ones so you get to see people drop dead ... ;) )

more like 3-4 years old.
Considering the amount of fame he got for being "Nasubi".
Besides, you people talk about Japanese "Game Show" as if its the worst thing in human history that abuses human rights. That reminds me, whos that stupid **** that made a movie about him doing stupid ****? Also, isnt there a retarded american or canadian show where they made people eat pizzas with maggots in it?
yes, must blame the japs

Yeah, forget the whole fact that contestants can decline to eat said pizza maggots at ANY time! THEY'RE EATING FLY LARVA! That's infinately worse than being forced to live a year and three months naked in a single room, only living on whatever you can win off the radio's contests!
Think before you post, ninjin.

I don't get it, we all know the world is ****ed and bla bla bla why the hell are people even trying to protect their little perfect country? Your country sucks, shut up and accept it.
Maybe a strange question, but what exactly stopped him from just walking away through the door?

Plus it's a TV show, I'd be a bit more cautious believing the "kidnapping".

Come on, this guy's an ACTOR. Not to say the show isn't harsh, stupid, cruel and so on, but I'm certain the guy knew what hes was going into, he certainly wasn't kidnapped but entered this room by his own will.
Now, is this show more ridiculous/mindless/stupid/cruel than Fear Factor, Survivor, Jackass or Dirty Sanchez? I don't think so, maybe your culture makes you perceive it as less acceptable, but it's the exact same principle : the audience enjoying seeing and mocking guys suffering/ridiculizing themselves.

only an asian could do that
the french man would have destroyed the room within minutes :D
dam japanese.. they're stupid

JaFO

There can't be a decline of civilisation, because that would have meant us humans were civilized to begin with ... ;)
