So what do you think about design?
What are your thoughts on what you do and see out there nowadays?

Too consumer / sales / ad oriented.
Not enough art - for - art's - sake design out there.
Agreed. I'm actually not all that fond of the BeyondUnreal design, it's probably just a matter of taste though. I personally like clean designs. There's some pretty simple and/or professional designs out there that simply look great. e.g. Bluerobot (http://www.bluerobot.com/)
A design, however, doesn't have to be strictly clean to be good methinks. There's some very nice flash-only sites out there for example. :)

That's the case when it comes to advertising. It is aimed at the audience like a shotgun. It's also assumed by many that people just don't have enough time to appreciate "art", so they just go with the quickest answer - "use sex!" ;)
"Clean" designs G-Lite, you mean minimal, simple elements?
Good stuff, and it looks tasteful in a lot of cases. I see it a lot, but less is more sometimes, right? I'm leaning a little more in the opposite direction these days. Never hurts to keep a good balance going though..

Well, actually, bluerobot seems a bit too simple to me. Just a tad more should do. It could also be the white background. White is such an empty color IMO. If it was just a very light grey it'd look better already.
Somewhere inbetween may be good too. I'd need an example to judge that. ;)

So I look around and see a great deal of image manipulation using photoshops, animation programs, etc. these days. In the right hands, the result sometimes looks so damn real you start thinking that the real is now the fake.
Question: Visually, what is out there that we can't do? Or just doesn't seem within reach yet...
Has anyone ever come across that challenge that they just couldn't measure up to?
[edit: yay, apparently everybody's 1337. very good. NEXT!]

Got a few moments of time to maybe learn a little something?
Check it:
Taste for Makers (http://www.paulgraham.com/taste.html)
The link above includes notes on the following:
Good design is simple.
Good design is timeless.
Good design solves the right problem.
Good design is suggestive.
Good design is hard.
Hope this helps. Good words to live and make by. Some of you may already know them, some may know by instinct; some will never get it.
