I need a program that will block/close ports. I am not looking for a firewall. Just a little program that runs in the background doing it's job.

BTW, I tried google. Not much help there. ;)

you mean a firewall

BesigedB has a point there.

:P

Seriously, get a free firewall proggy. It'll do your bidding without a hitch - trying to think of that one really great free one, can't think of it off the top of my head... I'm sure someone else will.

I have Kerio, but it doesn't block ports. :(
I need the program to be able to 'close port 445', etc. You know, listening ports.

If you aren't running any services on a port, it's not open. Then again, it's hard to know what services you are running... ;)

Zonealarm is probably the firewall Thrash123 was thinking of. That stealths ports so they wont respond to scans.

If you're using win2000/XP and just want to block a few ports you don't have to install any software. The more stuff you install the more that can go wrong ;)

Take a look at this

It does. You only have to make a rule for it.

Buy an old computer for $50, install Linux on it. Problem solved - a lot better than Zonealarm etc too ;)

Or do it like me and use both. ;)

Zone Alarm is one, but there is one called "My personal firewall" or something like that. It was pretty highly rated a while ago IIRC.

Oh, and .atlan, Linux has it's security holes too. It's just most attacks are on Windows machines because that's what most people run. Don't believe me? Check out the Hacking Exposed: Linux books :)

Anyways, if you were going for a firewall machine, I'd go with FreeBSD anyways because of it's stability compared to Linux. However, in your case, it's more efficient to get firewall software.

Linux only doesn't get attacked because it isn't mainstream like Windows is. I guarantee that when it gets more popular you'll see the same types of exploits. I have a friend who has a friend that runs Linux on his box. Seems something is sitting in the background, with administrative privileges, using 98% resources. So this while "Linux is immune to this kind of stuff" is a load of crap. It's not immune, it's just no one gives a big enough damn about it to start exploiting it.

I'm doubting it will get more popular at this rate. I hate having to work/install Linux, most distros feel slapped together (Not all distros are like this, I know). I'm a FreeBSD man myself :)

*edit* Oops, lets try to avoid derailing the thread. Original9 needs a firewall.
