What really annoyed me with freelancer was that the computer-generated missions, that are supposedly the bulk of the gameplay, and are where the game's title comes from, were ALL the same. It was always "go to waypoint A, kill hostiles, *optional* tractor an escape pod in". No convoy escort mission, no patrol mission on a trade lane, no "bring this very rare goods to this remote station in pirate-controlled space" type of mission, nothing , always the same search&destroy mission (and i mean it when i say 'the same', it's not a way of speaking). It especially showed when, after some plot twist, you completely change sides, yet you get the very same missions.
Similarly, being loyal to the same employer meant nothing, every guy had the same set of missions to offer, nothing like friendship/partnership building. To ad to this "it's always the same old thing", no matter where you docked, the offered missions were always the same, whereas one would excpect a trade outpost to offer slightly different missions than a military battleship.
The controls thing was a letdown too. It basically destroyed any finesse in the way to fly. It also made all ships the exact same, you had no feeling of changing when switching from one ship to another.
Last part : without spoiling anything, don't excpect to be surprised by the story, on the other hand, be prepared to smile and think "wow, they dared including that cliché again" many, many times
I reckon it's a fun game to play casually. But if you excpect it to last more than a couple weeks and still have something to offer (as they claim it), you'll be hugely disappointed.
