ehmmm... I'm just wondering if anyone knows good books on programming for idiots like me (aside for "the idiots guide to C++", which is...) I just have this strange fascination with computer language... don't ask why...

You could always subscribe to those magazines like "pentbytes" and "playcode", adult magazines for the adult code writers who discriminate when it comes to their fascination.

I've often heard Kernigan & Ritchie's book on C strongly recommended.
Any book from the publisher O'Reilly is a good bet. Those are the books with the funky woodcuts of animals on the covers. They publish a lot of books on programming.

I agree, 99% of the O'Reilly books are great. They're often aimed at readers with a moderate knowledge of the subject though. The SAMS Publisher books are often good too, and tend to have more of a 'newbie' emphasis (imho). You could try something like "Learn C++ in 21 days!" if you're a beginner. Bad title I know, but they're very good introductory books.

I have "Teach yourself c++ in 21 days" in HTML format on my HD if you want to have a look at it before buying. If you want to do only Windows programming you may try Visual C++.
