View Full Version : Rant about ranting.

Do half of you even know the meaning of the word “rant”? Seemingly not. A rant is any oration or written work that is created in anger or to inspire anger in those who are exposed to it. Some of you do this well enough, others lack the inspiration and skill to produce true rants. Most of them are just mindless pieces of garbage that only serve to increase your post count. Many of you simply write these pseudo-rants so that you can feel like you stand for something. This seems to happen often on these boards. I always assumed it was just moronic valley-girls that involved themselves in arguments just so they feel like they have a purpose in life other than shopping and screwing the football team. Last I checked, I didn’t think the members of these forums were a bunch of little girls that use too much hairspray, that wear MUDD jeans and spandex t-shirts that have glittery narcissistic words like “Princess” and “Hottie” all over them. Is that what you guys are? A bunch of mindless sheep that have no purpose in life other than to build your own opinions off of the statements and arguments of others?
Some of these rants are so utterly pointless that they can’t even be considered rants. For example, Alien recently posted a thread titled “Senceless rant…”. Not only did he fail to spell the word “senseless” correctly (but we won’t mention that again because this thread is not about spelling mistakes), he failed to create a decent topic sentence outlining his opinion or beliefs regarding his subject matter. His post’s main idea was the fact that he wanted “a purple monkey”. This is not a rant. This does not inspire anger. In anyone. I responded to it simply to humor him for the moment. In fact, he would’ve been better off giving his post the title of “Pointless and short-winded post concerning my future goal in life…”. Had he done that I would not be mentioning him in this thread. But no. Alien mistakenly assumed we would see his single sentence as a valid rant. He was wrong.
As a follow up to the mention of Alien and his pseudo-rant, we should also mention another individual of our community that tends towards involving himself in arguments that he has no grounds to be a part of. The one, the only, Mr. Apocalypse. After LifesBane introduced him to what was then, Planet Unreal Forums, he instantly involved himself in any controversial thread, whether it concerned him or not. He jumped into arguments that centered on long-time grudges and events that occurred before he ever came to these forums. Mr. Apocalypse spent much of his time here (at that point) diving into flame wars and arguments and taking side, whether he understood the issue or not.
But now that we have members at one end, we have to bring up individuals that reside at the other end of the rant-creating spectrum. In the Infiltration Off-Topic forum, there is one reigning king of rants. Rogue Leader. The majority of his posts are either defending or attacking political and worldly events and views. Others are actual rants detailing his opinions on subjects centering around the control and/or oppression of one group of people by another. He vehemently opposes many of the views shared by members of our community, and makes it widely known. Rogue Leader’s posts spawn massive arguments and flame wars that can span multiple pages and contain hundreds of posts. He has an unusual ability to anger just about everyone at one time or another. His threads and posts are riddled with opinionated and warped statements that are supported by facts, some taken out of context, from well known published or mass-media-created works that most forum members have either come across or heard of from word of mouth. Out of all the posters on this forum, Rogue Leader has definitely created more disturbances, and pissed off the administrators more often, than any other. Of course, Goat F*cker gets an honorable mention here, along with Pacman for thier contributions to the OT forums.
Congratulations you three. And to the rest of you, hurry up and flame me with cries of ‘Hypocrite’ and crap so I have something to reply to. Bastards.

I fu<b></b>cking agree, but why didn't you give mention to <b>Bad Mojo</b>? Sh<b></b>it, he deserves it more than anyone!
If you want to state your opinion, fine, you're free to do this, It's called freedom of speach. Unfortunately, some people chose too abuse this right. Some people are stupid, hot-headed, and annoying when jumping into a rant. And a rant IS supposed to inspire. Kibbles has this 100% correct (way to go man, I didn't see this coming from your direction:) ).
In school people love my rants. I have people come up to me "Nationalism! RANT!" and off I go. But here...ehhh, the only thing that stops me from ranting like rogue is I hate typing. yeah, I'm a lazy bastard. Sue me if you don't like it.

Freon: No.
Chronic: Mojo... yeah. On a scale from 1-10 he's lands at about 17 or so. But his weren't usually rants. They were flames. There is a difference, however slight. It's a gray area, but I chose to leave him out considering 90% of these newbies on the boards don't know who he is.
Here's a simple breakdown of -isms...
Patriotism - I love my country
Nationalism - Because I love my country, it's better than yours.
Facism - Because my country is better than yours, it's people are better than yours.
There's a fine line I hope American does not cross there. Since 9-11 I have begun to wonder :hmm:

A) You defined ranting as publishing a written work or delivering an oration inspired by or intended to inspire anger. You then mentionoed Rogue Leader and proceeded to defame him, specifically at how much anger his posts can cause. This doesn't seem to fit in well with your earlier defamation of Mr. Apocalypse, et. al. where you criticized them for not actually ranting. According to your above reasoning (unless I am misunderstanding you), Rogue Leader is a perfectly good example of an accomplished ranter.
B) These are the off-topic forums. "Take it to the O/T forum for all your rants, raves, and disgusts that have nothing to do with Inf." ;)
It seems to me that you used this thread as a method of personal attack against several people - why else put their names in bold?
Cheers.
edit: whoops, it looks like I did misunderstood your reasons for mentioning Rogue Leader. In any case, why did you put everybody's names in bold? They do look an awful lot like personal attacks, which are IMHO unnecessary.

Hmm...the first part of your 'rant' was pretty good. It sounded angrily written, and indeed serves to stir the embers of rage that may reside in the reader. However, that last paragraph sounds more like a documentary on the history of Infiltration Forum Ranters. Its totally lacking in any emotion whatsoever; it is purely objective and expository. This effectively diffuses any burning anger in the reader and makes them feel more like they have just watched an hour long special on the History Channel about the Infiltration Off-Topic (Political) Forum.
But it was some pretty good ranting up until that last paragraph.

Read my third sentence.
"A rant is any oration or written work that is created in anger or to inspire anger in those who are exposed to it."
Now think about it. Good. Now read your post. Good. Now go scroll up, I know it may be tough for you... but you'll figure it out... and read my section on Rogue Leader. Under the context of my rant, I did not damage his reputation or insult him in anyway. I stated the truth. Out of all active ranters, he is the undisputed king. I think you missed the line that said "individuals that reside at the other end of the rant-creating spectrum"
Now, on the other hand, I made fun of Apocalypse because some consider his posts in many cases to be rants. He was also mentioned because his presence is parallel to that of an opinionated and cause-less valleygirl at times.
So yes, I do think you might have misunderstood me a bit. But you did get the personal attack correct. That was to illustrate a prime component of any good rant when dealing with acts perpetrated by an individual entity. And yes these are the OT forums. And ranting is not wrong. It's just the spamming of non-rants labeled as so (as is the current trend) that is getting just a bit obnoxious. Keep in mind, this was a rant.

I'm actually a little confused about the point of this thread. Without further exlanation from Kibbles-N-Bits, it looks like it was just meant to start a flame war.

ES: I had to offer Rogue some praise at one point or another, and considered saying things like "Alien did something this way, and it was wrong, RL is better". That kind of thing... but I would've confused certain readers more than they already are, and they would not realize exactly who I had decided to hate for the brief 5 minutes it took to write that... some are already confused enough as-is... Your point?
This isn't meant to be directed at anyone in particular, and thus serves no useful purose other than revealing how random my brain can work, but I read that line and the following hypothetical response popped into my head:
"Oh, you missed my point? Well maybe you'll catch it as I <b>RAM IT THROUGH YOUR EYESOCKET AND INTO THE BACK OF YOUR BRAIN YOU ILLITERATE MOTHER FU<I></I>CKER!!!!</b>"
That is all.

Read my third sentence.
"A rant is any oration or written work that is created in anger or to inspire anger in those who are exposed to it."
Yes, yes I did. I'll admit that I started skimming it when you just started to look like a jerk flaming people for whatever reason it is that people like to insult others through anonymous mediums. That was a mistake, I should have proceeded to wade through it and pay a bit more attention.
Now think about it. Good. Now read your post. Good. Now go scroll up, I know it may be tough for you... but you'll figure it out... and read my section on Rogue Leader.
Why do you feel the need to be so condescending and insulting here? Does it give you some kind of pleasure?
Under the context of my rant, I did not damage his reputation or insult him in anyway. I stated the truth. Out of all active ranters, he is the undisputed king. I think you missed the line that said "individuals that reside at the other end of the rant-creating spectrum"
I think you missed the line where I edited my earlier post, where I said, "edit: whoops, it looks like I did misunderstood your reasons for mentioning Rogue Leader."
Now, on the other hand, I made fun of Apocalypse because some consider his posts in many cases to be rants. He was also mentioned because his presence is parallel to that of an opinionated and cause-less valleygirl at times.
Other than not really undesrtanding your motives behind starting this thread in the first place, I understood that part of the post. I'll freely admit that I don't understand the way trolls and bullies think. I really don't. I try to understand why causing humaliation and suffering in others might bring joy, but I just don't get it. Sorry. I probably never will understand that.
So yes, I do think you might have misunderstood me a bit. But you did get the personal attack correct. That was to illustrate a prime component of any good rant when dealing with acts perpetrated by an individual entity.
Why do you need to use personal attacks to illustrate this point? I think if you took a little longer than the five minutes you earlier mentioned to really think this through and write it well you could have been equally clear, perhaps more so, if you had used either generalizations or fictitious examples.
And yes these are the OT forums. And ranting is not wrong. It's just the spamming of non-rants labeled as so (as is the current trend) that is getting just a bit obnoxious.
I do agree that threads should contain the content advertised in the subject.
Keep in mind, this was a rant.
Indeed.

In case people are taking your word as gospel on the English language, here are a couple of minor corrections:
nationalism (http://www.dictionary.com/search?q=nationalism): 1. Devotion to the interests or culture of one's nation.
fascism (http://www.dictionary.com/search?q=fascism) : 1. A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.

Shadow: I'll apologize if I sounded condescending. I didn't really mean it that way, but I am kind of sick of the PM's and questions I get from people who don't actually read things. Not to say you don't...
As for making fun of Apocalypse, I am his classmate and we spend most of our free time making fun of him at our LAN parties. He's the one hosting them ;) Me and LifesBane joke with him all the time about him being a newbie and stuff. :)
Concerning the personal attacks, again, I'll have to refer to my third sentence, again. Personal attacks, although these weren't made in the sense that I hate these people, are a very effective way of angering one or more parties. Which is the subjective goal of the rant.
On to my brief explanation of patriotism vs. nationalism vs. facism. I was not speaking directly of the type of government, but rather the belief structure surrounding the political parties that advocate the separate -isms. I took those definitions a bit out of context, as I had used them earlier today to explain parts of Mein Kampf as well as the German Nastionalists Party's sentiment regarding other races and countries. Sorry if it leads to some confusion.
