Download Corruption

Lately, whenever I download any kind of compressed file over 10 megs or so (zip, rar, or compressed exe, usually game demos, mods, and such), the file is corrupt when I try to unpack it. Does anyone know of any possible causes or solutions?

First of all, check that the size of the file is the same as it should be, second of all, what Browser are you using, and are you using any Download accelerators?

File size is always correct and the file will open, but when winrar or winzip gets done with extracting the uncompressed file, it gives me a CRC error and tells me the file is corrupt. I'm using the latest version of IE and I'm not using any download programs.

might not be it, but make sure you unrar .rar file with winrar, unzip .zip file with winzip, ace winace.....

Even if the other can do it, (winrar can unzip files), it will often be corrupted.

Also, what server are you d/ling from. I had some problem d/ling from Fileplanet and getting corrupted file when I used other then gamespy server. So it might be the server you are d/ling from.

Or maybe it's a problem with winzip, winrar. You could try reinstalling them...

Do you experience more system crashes than usual lately?

Not sure how relevant this is, but a friend of mine had a similar problem with his new 'puter. Turned out it was the VIA northbridge chipset that screwed up the IDE channel or something. The sure sign of this is that large files tend to get corrupted when moving/unpacking them. (I have the AMD northbridge chipset myself, so I dodged this bullet ;).)

So if you have a VIA chipset on your motherboard you could try getting some updated patches from their web site.
