Who makes these maps? I didn't d/l any of them, but there were like 15 of them on StealthDP's site, and I was curious about the quality of them...

Blito makes them. He does map quickly. GruntRun was part of a map contest for maps UNDER 300k for onlinbe so don't judge him by that one. Several of the small k maps posted at Stealths were for that contest.

http://stealthdp.com/mapbrowse.php?show=b

He's the maker of B3RedneckWoody; not a fav of mine but a very popular map for it's gameplay and on several servers. Check out MaxiCrusher for one of the most novel CTF maps. His AtomicCore is that fun "infinite loop" map that's been discussed around here, I believe.

LostMarines is a great map for gameplay. It's very intense online with 20 players.

Try B3CageMatch2. Another <300k map (only 84k-don't know if is bot-pathed) it really requires gameplay as there is a small trick to getting the flags.

In short, he doesn't make eye candy maps but is always trying new ideas, which is what keeps this game fresh--plus he's a good guy.

So he's one of those mappers :)

I played that one once on an CTF instagib server. Normally I have a ping there of 50-80, and so have most other players who come there. However whit Maxicrusher, everybody suddenly got a ping of 250-300! Could all those movers cause such heavy network travel and be responsible for lagging the server?

heh, 8 brushes, 1 light, sounds like Q should review it and give it one of his famous quicky zeroes. :D

How hard is it to make a map with 8 brushes and 1 light, of course he maps quickly. One could make a hundred maps in a day doing that, and they would all suck.

Did you not read the part of Horton's post mentioning the <300K map contest? GruntRun was for that contest.. The whole point was for the mappers to churn out a bunch of small maps and see how fun a map could be with a tiny filesize.

Don't knock them until you've tried them. Like Horton said, LostMarines is a great map; redneckwoody is popular (I also don't like it much), CrystalBrick is great, and AtomicCore is great fun when there are no whiners around (the whiners don't realize the map just loops around and instead think it's humongous). blito3 is a hit and miss guy..some maps are great and are lots of fun, others aren't as great. But at least he's still bringing stuff to the table and trying new things while he's at it (MaxiCrusher...great fun IMO). And while I can't speak for him, I seem to remember somebody saying once that he tries to minimize filesize by reducing the number of different textures he uses in a map.

I dunno why the server got all laggy with MaxiCrusher, but it hasn't had any adverse affect on my ping (or anyone else's as far as I can tell..people would have complained) when it ran on the Playground. Maybe the comp running the match couldn't process all those movers or the instagib traces in conjunction with the movers.

the contest should have been create a 10 meg map or something so you can at least have grapichs too :)

blito3
5th Mar 2002, 08:02 PM
it was a 300k contest not a 10meg contest
doh.....
the whole point was to make a playable map
that looked good at 300k

A bit defensive are we. Try a few more brushes than 7 and you might be leet someday. Try like around 700 brushes or so. And keep the map from being too open so you dont have poly problems.

Bad FPS comes from big open areas with lots of brushes and dynamic lighting. Avoid that for starters.

Again..the 7-brushed map was for a mini-map contest..you shouldn't judge it as you would any other map..the objective was to make a fun map with tiny filesize.

Um..read my above comment. You're saying something like the following: there's a painting contest in which people can use blue and gold only and you criticize a painting for lack of color because it's only blue and gold. So..are you in management (or are you planning on entering it)? :D

It's nice of you to offer advice though..:) perhaps you should post links to some of your maps so Blito3 can learn from them.

So I'm too lazy to d/l any of your maps, but I like 1337 maps, which of your maps should I d/l? Just one.

I'd say lostmarines or maxicrusher but that's me..lots of people don't like maxicrusher but I think it's clever. Anyways..listen to blito3 and not me..:)

Yeah-- try lostmarines. It's a smallish and simple map but online gameplay is GREAT!

Eye candy is important to me too but it's over-rated. If gameplay is dull I don't care how good it looks... LostMarines with 20 good players is an absolute hoot!

to me this means "spamfest"
I don't see the appeal of this map, I'll have to join you online and play it sometime. I haven't kicked any ass lately anyway :p

if i play a map I want to enjoy it. lots of textures used is n00bish. you got to use one tex pack so your map will have a certain look. now some cubes together don'T make an cool map... I understand the idea of that contest but if some peeps can't remember more than a bunch of 7 brush maps than I would hurry and make some 1337 maps... btw. my map in progress is something around 600 brushes and I am like 30% finished...

Nvm, I already hate this map :/

7th Mar 2002, 02:35 PM
aww no worries..it's pretty far out of the way..only a few people use it at any given time.

And it's next to impossible to stumble across it...so the secret stays pretty well-preserved.

almost forgot..it's in rotation at The Playground (http://www.stealthdp.com) this week..I'd say come into the game on redneckwoody (the round before I'm guessing..) and you'll be infor lostmarines. that is..if you're up for it.
