Sorry for looking ignorant. An error has occurred.
My brand new 20 gig IBM Deskstar crashed on Friday morning (And no, I didn't drop it or anything). The place I got it from swapped it for a 30 gig fujitsu, but I lost some stuff I'd been working on that month, including a book outline :(
I almost said "I don't trust IBM drives as far as I can throw them", but when I'm enraged that's quite a long way. I ran a mile.
Anyway, Im back now. Thanks for the offer, but I think someone from the BU modsquad is on it already.

ouch , that sux ... hmm, a friend of mine here said his 30GB Deskstar crashed after a year and there's a class-action suit against IBM now. Which makes me very nervous since i'm [foolishly] running raid0 striping with only 2 HDD's, and they're both 45GB Deskstars, about a year old .... so if one goes i lose everything. What a shame about Deskstars, i though ibm had finally made a perfect HDD ... my raid array is sooooooo fast for a 90GB volume ...
well lemme know if you run into any delay with the zone thing; would prolly take all of 20 minutes to write it, package it, and send it off, if it's just toggling zone velocity with a zoneinfo or causing it to happen in a zoneinfo with a special trigger or something.

Hmm, my brother works with PCs and is always in the know. He said the errors were most common with 75 gig Deskstars, but it looks like all of them now. Apparently, it's something to do with a manufacturing error.

Ah, yes:

That's exactly what happened to my 20 gig. *CLICK-CLICK.scrrrrr...*
Kudos to IBM for inventing the PC, but look where their "safe" conservative business strategies are getting them now. The group that brought the PC to market were so out of sync (Read: creative, innovative, and fast) with traditional IBM practice that big blue disbanded them. I think the fate of IBM was sealed as soon as Compaq cloned the BIOS, but behemoths take so long to die. I believe the other year they were trying to flog souped-up mainframe systems as a revolutionary new thing.
